Adrift with No Direction in the Stream of Life

It is common to find ourselves adrift, sailing in a sea of uncertainty. There is no sign of the shore and where we are heading is a mystery, the journey has no sense at all, and the waters are moving, but we seem to be going nowhere. Some are conscious of their current circumstances, they are aware that they have no destination nor route or direction, but some people don’t even know or don’t want to know that they are castaways in a rocking boat sailing aimlessly. We have two options: we can remain as we are and pray for a happy ending, or we can adjust the sails and get to desired destination.

Life begins, life ends, and what we do in the meantime is what creates our life experience. We create our own story, we leave our legacy. Our purpose is the reason of our existence, because if we had no purpose we wouldn’t be here. There is no accident, no coincidence, we are here for a reason, whether we decide to find that reason or not is what is going to make us successful or not, and the decision is at our own expense, it can cost us a lot or nothing at all, and all depends whether we decide to create our own future or leave it everything to chance.

Imagine that life is an ocean, and we are sailing through it in our ships. You could go everywhere in this ocean, but there will be times of adversity, storms, giant waves, assassins creatures waiting to devour you, scorching heat, and you will feel fatigue, anxiety, sadness, anger, and you will want to give up. At the same time, there will be good times, times of calm waters, great weather, blue skies, and you will feel happy, joyful, and hopeful, and you will feel more courageous than ever, sailing with grace through calm waters.

“The great thing in this world is not so much where we stand as in what direction we are moving.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes, Senior

You will experience these two different phases through out your journey, whether you have a direction or not, but your direction will determine your destination. You can choose the route to a mediocre, miserable, turbulent life or you can choose the route to a calm, happy and fulfilling life. What I mean with this is that our external circumstances may vary, there can be turmoil or calmness, that we do not control, but what we control is whether to be victims of our environment and leave everything to chance, or be the creators of our own future, taking back the control of our life, adjusting the sails, and with courage taking the route that will lead us to the place where want to get.

I want to clarify that I’m in favor of not having all your life planned, I believe we cannot plan all our life, so it is good to simply live your life, enjoy the moment, and let life surprise you, but in order to not lose control I believe we must determine what we want. We must always aim something, and don’t lose sight of what we want. For instance, I love traveling, and I love buying one way ticket without knowing where I will be tomorrow, but at the same time I know where I want to go, I know what I want, I know my desired destination, which is not in fact a final destination, but it is the journey and purpose of our lives, and in my case that is traveling around the world with the person I love for the rest of my life, having new and exciting adventures, helping and inspiring people to become the best version of themselves to make this world a better place. So I might not have all my life planned but I know what I want, and that gives me the power to adjust the sails and take another route if I consider that I’m not heading to my desired destination.

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you’ve imagined.” – Henry David Thoreau

Are you in the right direction? Or are you adrift? It is what you are doing now getting you closer to the place where you want to be tomorrow? In fact, the most important question is: Do you know where do you want to be tomorrow? If the answer is yes, congratulations! Keep moving forward, adjust the sails whenever necessary and don’t lose sight of the shore, meanwhile enjoy the beautiful, sometimes chaotic but amazing journey!

If the answer is no you have two options: You can determine what you really want, and I believe everyone deep inside their hearts know what they really want, we are simply sometimes too limited to dream big due to the limitations imposed by the society in which we live, that limits and oppress our true self, or you can refuse to live the life you are capable of living, you can deny your true potential and be at mercy of fate.

“If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.” – Lao Tzu

Dreaming big will cost you nothing; not dreaming at all will cost you everything. If you gamble with your life, there are high chances that you will lose it all. Therefore, do not let adversity sink you, do not let the stream decide your future, but take the control of your ship, determine your destination, decide the best route, adjust the sails, turn the rudder and go with courage and faith in the direction that will take out the best version of yourself and will bring you the life that you deserve!

Do not be a castaway adrift, do not let luck decide your future, take back the control of your own life and create the life you have always imagined!
