Should we go back to normal?

Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, our normal lives have changed and our reality has ceased to be what it was, but in the midst of this crisis, the humanity has been provided with something very special: More time. In our hectic lives filled by long working hours, studies, tasks, social gatherings and responsibilities time is a luxury. Now, most of us have been forced to stay home due to the COVID-19 outbreak that has severely affected humans around the world, but this situation has given us time, perhaps not time to travel, to go to festivals, events, concerts, shopping malls, parks or time to gather with friends and family but we have got time to think, meditate and reflect, and the question is, should we really go back to “normal” after the pandemic?

"normal"

It was almost the end of the high season here in the north of Norway. Many travelers from around the world come during winter to visit and discover this magical winter wonderland. For me, working in the tourism area, having 10 hours shifts, time was definitely a luxury. All of a sudden, from one day to another, it was over. Not because the season was over but because our lives had a radical change due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The borders were closed and a 14 days quarantine was established for those visiting the country. That meant the abrupt temporary closing of all tourism offices in the city and around the world. Just like that, I went from having almost no time to have all the time in the world.

It is not uncommon to feel disoriented when your life changes abruptly and one immediately and desperately rush to go back to normal, that means, back to what we know, what gives us that sense of security, our comfort zone. However, I decided to embrace this opportunity. I finally had time, something I was desperately looking for. I had time to relax, to have a proper breakfast, to enjoy the beautiful view from my window, to exercise, to make all kind of homemade meals, watch a good movie, play board games, read, chill in the sofa for hours with my cat on my lap, have a nice and long talk with the people around me at my house or via the internet, but above all, I had time to think, to wonder, to contemplate, to consider, to reflect.

“Crises and deadlocks when they occur have at least this advantage, that they force us to think.” – Jawaharlal Nehru

One day I was wondering what will happen to the world after the pandemic is over, the question resounding in my head was: How do we go back to normal after the Coronavirus? All the possible scenarios in my head sounded complicated, unrealistic or completely crazy. But then I started considering the fact that maybe going back to “normal” is not the best idea. Perhaps, humanity can use this crisis as a benefit, as a way to change everything for the better. Perhaps, we can have good use of the time that was given to us to reconsider what normal really is and take this time to change the way we think, we behave and we act in our daily lives.

It is in the time of crisis when our lives are shaped, and we can be active participants in the shaping of our new lives by giving our best to shape it in the way we want it to be. The truth is that while there are some circumstances that cannot be controlled we can always do something to improve our current circumstances and our future. Therefore, it is important to not miss the opportunity we have to change those things that are not so “normal” and to learn the lessons behind this crisis. We have now the chance to improve our life and the life of others.

“In every crisis, doubt or confusion, take the higher path – the path of compassion, courage, understanding and love.” – Amit Ray

We have the time to decide if we really want to go back to our normal lives or what we considered normal, we can decide now to change something about our life, to improve ourselves, to change bad habits and behaviors, for example, this crisis has taught us that in order to succeed and to guarantee our existence we need to take care of each other regardless our nationality, social status, genre, and age. It is now more than ever that we need to take care of ourselves and others in order to avoid more unnecessary deaths, more suffering and put an end to this crisis. This invisible enemy called COVID-19 has taught us that in the end, if we are not together as one no matter where we come from, we will cease to exist. This virus has taught us that kindness, respect, compassion, and love between humans was, is and will always be the key to our success. Separated we are weak, insignificant, vulnerable, but united we are strong and powerful.

Let’s use this time to think about what are the things worth returning to such as being around your family and friends, traveling around the world, going to your favorite festival, to the movies or train and enjoy your favorite sport, enjoying nature and life with freedom and let’s also think about those things we might want to change such as being more compassionate and kind with others and the planet, to take care of our health and the health of others, to appreciate more the little things being more grateful with everything we have, to value our time on earth knowing that one day we are here and the other we might not, to understand how important it is to spend time at home with our family, kids, pets, having time to cook, to play, to love each other rather than always rushing after things that do not really matter.

“The World is my country, all mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion.” – Thomas Paine

The truth is that most of what we call “normal” is not so normal at all and it is indeed destroying ourselves, all other beings in the world and the planet more than the Coronavirus. Therefore, it is time now to reconsider our actions. Our selfishness, jealousy, negativity, our greed, criticism, racism our bad habits and consumerism is separating our selves from each other and we are slowly destroying animals and the environment, therefore, what we do now to change what we have accepted as normal will determine our future and the lessons learned during this period can help to our evolution, uniting us as humans and being prepared for any other crisis.

Let’s use this extra time to our benefit by thinking and focusing on which parts of your normal life you want to return, which parts are worth returning to and how do you want the “new normal” to look like. Life as we knew changed and will never be the same, let’s create together a brand new destiny!

Rebels with a Cause

There are many rebels, but few with a cause. These rebels think they are being free but what they do not know is that they are only puppets of a system that have them under its control. Therefore, to attain real freedom one must discover a cause to fight for, this cause is the purpose of our very existence, this cause is not meant to destroy us but to reveal our true potential. Being your real self and doing what you came here to do is what gives you freedom. It is time to find your purpose, and be a rebel with a cause!

"We are rebels for a cause, poets with a dream, and we won't let this world die without a fight." - Albert Camus

When we are kids we dare to dream, and we dare to dream big. We believe that everything is possible, and we know what we want, and we do everything we can in order to get it. But day after day, all our illusions start to disappear, adults inadvertently begin to limit ourselves. And one day we stop being kids and we start being teenagers, and like an uncontrollable impulse that comes from within we start to rebel to all those who limited us.

The problem is we become rebels without a cause, or a cause that is not yet known or is not defined. And that makes us fight the wrong battle, because we don’t revolt against those who were limiting us but we revolt against ourselves. We start making choices which its consequences destroy us more than anyone else. We believe we are winning, but in the end we are only losing the battle. We make a revolution against ourselves. And one day this revolution ends, we are now grown up, and defeated, confused, lost and worried we become the miserable adults we were trying so hard to avoid, and only from time to time, we do things that makes us believe we are the bold rebels we were before, but in the blink of an eye we go back to our duties.

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” – Steve Jobs

Therefore, in order to create a revolution that will bring the change that we were looking for, we need to become the type of rebel that will make us successful, we will have to become rebels with a cause, a cause that puts our heart on fire, a cause that take out the best version of ourselves, a cause that gives meaning to our lives, a cause that challenge us, a cause that will change our lives, and the lives of others forever. The only way to deal with a society that limits us is to become an activist for freedom, a rebel with a cause, and be so utterly free as to start thinking by ourselves, being less impulsive, being less controlled, and being free to create the life that we have imagined.

The truth is every time someone starts to question things, or starts to see things in a different way, and comes with a crazy idea that could change the world, that could push human race forward, that can truly create an evolution and change the way in which humans live, they are most of the time treated as dreamers, crazy or rebels. But these people are crazy enough to think that they can make a difference, and they are free enough to act in a certain way to achieve their goals, they don’t depend on others approval and they don’t feel comfortable with the status quo. These people are the ones that make history, these are the people that change the world.

“The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.” – Albert Camus

So who are you going to be? A rebel without a cause making the kind of decisions that will create a negative impact on your life? Are you going to truly limit yourself by thinking you can’t be more than a simple rebel that does some crazy stuff from time to time? Or are you really going to become a rebel and fight for your freedom? Are you going to be a rebel with a cause, being the creator of your destiny, freeing yourself, creating the world you dream, and having the life you truly deserve? You have to remember one thing: nobody limits us more than we do, our true limitations are found within ourselves, and we have the key to our own freedom.

Do you want to be a rebel? So be a rebel with a cause, and in order to succeed you will have to be willing to do the things other don’t. Dare to dream, imagine, discover and create, work, study and learn, question everything, ask why, find your own conclusions, be yourself, learn from your mistakes, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something, love, grow, evolve and be free. Because true rebels are those who make a positive impact on their lives and everyone’s lives and are bold enough as to change the world!

The Habit of Making Excuses

We limit ourselves and sabotage our own dreams, goals and desires by making excuses. Our own excuses create barriers between us and our dreams, pushing away from us everything we have always wanted. Therefore, if we want to make our dreams come true, we must begin by leaving the habit of making excuses.

“Ninety-nine percent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses.” - George Washington Carver

Every day we have a new excuse for not doing the things we have always wanted to do. We convince ourselves through the excuses we make, as a way of having a justification for not following the path that will lead us to the realization of our dreams and goals. They condemn us to live a life we do not like, and the worst part of all is that we believe that those excuses are valid, blaming them for our failure, when in fact, we are the cause of our own failure.

Why do we make so many excuses? Why do we punish ourselves in such a way? Why do we condemn ourselves to live a life we do not like? Why we refuse to live the kind of life that will bring us everything we have been searching for? Simple: because it is easier that way. It is easier to make an excuse and do nothing, than to do all the things we have to do in order to achieve our desired goals and make all our dreams come true.

“If you really want to do something, you’ll find a way. If you don’t, you’ll find an excuse.” – Jim Rohn

By making excuses we chose the easy way out, and with easy I do not mean the less painful. Because it is painful to work hard in order to achieve our goals, but it is more painful to be stuck in a life we do not want, doing things we do not like, and it is even more painful to know that we are the reason why we haven’t done the things we have always wanted to do. It is hard to recognize that in the end no one is more responsible than us of our own failure.

I constantly hear people saying things like: I don’t have enough money, I don’t have time, my family won’t allow it, I don’t have the resources, I have to work, it is too hard, I’m too tired, I don’t have the knowledge, I have to look after my kids, I’m too old, I’m too young, my wife/husband/mother/father will not approve it, I have many things to do, and so on. Have you ever heard something like that? I guess so. I heard those words from many people, even from myself. We are constantly making excuses and we believe they are valid, and under the phrase: “I am not making excuses; I’m just being realistic” we justify ourselves.

“The only thing standing between you and your goal is the bullshit story you keep telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve it.” – Jordan Belfort

The truth is nothing can limit us, except our own personal thoughts. There is always a way to do something, and most of the time it won’t be easy, it won’t be simple, but it will be worth it. Therefore, in order to achieve our goals and make our dreams become a reality we must stop the habit of making excuses. If you want to be successful, if you want to achieve your goals, you will have to stop looking for excuses, and start looking for solutions. If other people are doing what you would like to do, if someone is living the life of your dreams, if somebody else has achieved what you would like to achieved, is not because they have been lucky, but because they have quit the habit of making excuses. They have decided to do whatever it takes to make their dreams become a reality, and you as well can do the same.

Stop thinking for a second the reasons why you can’t do something, and think as if everything was possible. What will you be doing now? What can you do right now that will get you closer to the place you want to be? What would be the right steps that will make you achieve your goals?

I know from my own experience how wonderful it is to do the things I once thought I couldn’t do. It always looks impossible, until it’s done. Anyway, what can happen if you try? Take responsibility for your life, and either find a way or create a way, and live the life you have imagined!

Be careful of your thoughts

Be careful of your thoughts, they control your life, as they have all the power to create your reality. What you see in your life it’s merely a set of thoughts, and that is why people have different realities. Your reality is the product of your thinking.

"The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts." - Marcus Aurelius

We are thinking all the time, and how we feel in that moment depends in what is in our mind in that particular moment. Our thoughts can be positive or negative, but never both at the same time, what is going to give us our emotions, and our reality. So how you feel will be the result of what you were thinking. Remember that your thoughts have the power to control your emotions. So you will find that the key to control your emotions lies in your thoughts, if you want to change your reality, change the way you are thinking.

We can divide our thoughts in positive and negative thoughts, where our positive thoughts are those that make us feel good like thoughts of happiness, joy or gratitude, and then we have our negative thoughts that make us feel bad like sadness, anxiety or fear. So we can feel happy or we can feel sad, the choice is made by us depending in our thoughts, if you have positive thoughts you will feel happy, if you have negative thoughts you will feel miserable.

“If you realized how powerful your thoughts are, you would never think a negative thought.” – Peace Pilgrim

Everything is connected; your thoughts give you your emotions and feelings, what will form your behavior, and what will give your reality. So, to change our life experience, we must change our thinking, we must choose those thoughts based in positive things, so we can have better feelings and good emotions, what will make us to have a better behavior, what will give us a reality full of happiness and joy.

It takes only one thought to change everything, one different thought and you will not only change how you feel in a particular moment, but you will change your whole life experience. It takes only one positive thought to go from sadness to happiness; you just have to say to yourself that no matter what is happening right now, this is not the end, and you will be happy, because you deserve it.

“A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.” – Mahatma Gandhi

I can say from my own experience that this is not something easy to do, but I can also say that is possible. What we have to do is to control our thoughts, and not let our thoughts to control us, and the easiest way is to open our perspective, so we can see everything in a different way, and understand that what is happening to us is happening for a reason, a reason we must learn to comprehend, so we can learn to see the positive side of it, a positive side that is sometimes hard to see because of our limited perspective.

We must be aware of the power of our thoughts, so we can control it, especially the negative thoughts, otherwise it will control us and it will destroy us. The day we learn how to control our thoughts, we will be capable of choosing a positive thought rather than a negative thought, and so we will decide to be happy at every moment rather than be sad needlessly.

“Your worst enemy cannot harm you as much as your own unguarded thoughts.” – Buddha

Always remember that your thoughts creates your reality, whatever you are thinking right now is what you are going to experience in your life. The negative thoughts will give you negative feelings, what will give you unfortunate situations, and everything around will seem to be against you, when in fact, is you the one who are against yourself, because you have chosen to have negative thoughts, negative emotions and negative behaviors what gave you your miserable and awful reality. But if you choose positive thoughts, you will have positive emotions and positive behaviors that will give you happy situations what is going to make you feel happy about your life because your reality will be amazing.

Look around you, if you can only see a miserable life, look again, there is always something to be happy for no matter what you are going through, take the negative thoughts away from your mind, and flood your mind with positive thoughts and you will see what you couldn’t see so far.
