When Our Strategies Stop Working

Some things in life are outside our control. Luck is real. Circumstances matter. Not everything that happens to us is our fault, and pretending otherwise isn’t empowering — it’s just a different kind of trap. Yet the truth is that our actions often play an important role in shaping the direction of our lives.

When we repeatedly think the same thoughts, react in the same ways, and follow the same patterns, it is likely that we will continue experiencing similar results. So it can be useful to pause and ask ourselves a simple question:

Are the patterns I’m following helping me move toward the life I want?

If the answer is yes, that’s a good sign. It means the direction you’re moving in is supporting your goals and values. But if the answer is no, it might simply be an invitation to adjust something.

Sometimes we respond to difficult outcomes by blaming circumstances, other people, or bad luck. And while external factors certainly influence our lives, it can also be helpful to look inward and ask whether there are patterns we could approach differently.

“Achieve success in any area of life by identifying the optimum strategies and repeating them until they become habits.” – Charles J. Givens

One important lesson many people learn over time is that growth rarely happens without change. Our environment can influence us, but it does not have to define our future. Even when circumstances are difficult, small changes in our approach can gradually open new possibilities. When something in life isn’t working, reflection can be powerful.

You might ask yourself:

  • What actions are currently helping me move forward?
  • What patterns keep leading to the same frustrating results?
  • What could I try differently?

Sometimes improvement comes through learning new skills, asking for guidance, or simply experimenting with new ways of approaching challenges.

“The first step toward success is taken when you refuse to be a captive of the environment in which you first find yourself.” – Mark Caine

Growth rarely happens all at once. It usually comes through gradual learning: trying something new, making mistakes, adjusting, and continuing forward. The goal is not perfection, but progress.

When we allow ourselves to stay curious and open to change, we often discover new ways of moving forward that we hadn’t considered before.

If the strategies we have been using are not leading us where we want to go, that doesn’t mean the journey is over. Sometimes it simply means it’s time to try a different path. Change can be uncomfortable, but it can also be the beginning of growth.

There’s no single blueprint that works for everyone. But self-awareness, honesty, and a willingness to keep learning — those seem to show up in every version of a life well-lived. Start there.
