At times in life, it can feel as if we are drifting through uncertain waters. The horizon is unclear, the destination unknown, and the journey itself can feel confusing. We move forward, yet sometimes it seems as if we are not really getting anywhere. Some people recognize this feeling of drifting — they sense that they are moving without a clear direction. Others may not notice it at all, or may prefer not to ask the difficult questions that come with it. In moments like these, we often have a choice. We can continue drifting and hope that things eventually work themselves out, or we can pause, reflect, and begin to steer our lives with greater intention.

Life begins, life ends, and what we do in between becomes our story. The experiences we choose, the values we follow, and the direction we pursue all shape the kind of life we ultimately live. That doesn’t mean everything is under our control. Circumstances, luck, and unexpected events influence our paths in many ways. But even within uncertainty, we still have some ability to adjust our direction.
One way to think about life is like sailing across an ocean. The ocean is vast, unpredictable, and constantly changing. There will be calm waters and difficult storms. Some days the wind will carry us forward effortlessly; other days the waves will challenge our balance and patience. But whether the journey feels smooth or difficult, the direction we choose still matters.
“The great thing in this world is not so much where we stand as in what direction we are moving.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes, Senior
Choosing a direction does not mean we must plan every detail of our lives. In fact, many of life’s most meaningful moments happen when we allow ourselves to explore, adapt, and remain open to change. Living intentionally does not require a perfectly mapped route. It simply means having some sense of what matters to us and adjusting our course when we notice we are moving away from it.
For example, I love traveling. Many times I have bought one-way tickets without knowing exactly where I would be weeks later. The path itself was uncertain, but the deeper intention remained clear. What mattered to me was experiencing the world, sharing life with the person I love, discovering new places, and inspiring others along the way. Even when the route changed, the direction stayed the same.
“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you’ve imagined.” – Henry David Thoreau
That sense of direction can be powerful. It allows us to adjust the sails when necessary and make small corrections when we notice we are drifting too far from what matters. So it can be helpful to occasionally ask ourselves a few simple questions:
Am I moving in a direction that feels meaningful to me?
Is what I’m doing today aligned with the life I want to build?
Do I know what matters enough to guide my decisions?
If the answer is yes, then keep sailing. Adjust when necessary, and enjoy the unpredictable but often beautiful journey. If the answer is no, that realization is not a failure — it may simply be an invitation to pause and reconsider your course.
“If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.” – Lao Tzu
Life will always contain uncertainty. Storms will come, and calm waters will return. But the ability to reflect on our direction — and to adjust our sails when needed — is one of the most powerful tools we have.
Sometimes the most meaningful change begins with a simple decision: to stop drifting and start steering.
