A Wonderful Stroke of Luck

There are those moments throughout our lifetime when luck does not seem to be in our favor. The things we want are denied to us in a very brutal way and feelings of despair, sorrow, anger, and disappointment flood our heart. Suddenly we found ourselves lost standing in front of a brick wall in the middle of the road in the journey of our lives. The things we wanted, our desires and dreams have been taken away from us, the doors has been closed, and our hopes and illusions disappeared. Confused and upset we try to find the reason for our bad luck. We ask again and again, why? And the answer conspicuous by its absence, until now?…

"Remember that sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck." - Dalai Lama

Sometimes in our lives no matter what we do and how much we try to have the things we want, life insist to deny us the things we yearn, and as if in life everything were about luck, we consider ourselves to be in the group of those with the worst one, but what if I tell you that sometimes what it seems to be bad luck, is in fact, good luck? What if those moments of bad luck in our lives are what we need in order to get a better luck? What if those moments of bad luck are actually saving us from a worse luck? What if those moments are giving us the chance to have a better future? What if sometimes life has to deny us the things we want, in order for us to have better things?

The truth is, in many cases, what it seems to be bad luck, is only an opportunity in disguise, an opportunity to take another road, a better way, to develop ourselves, to improve, to evolve, to create those things that we really want, deserve and that will really take out the best version of ourselves, but it is true that when life snatches from us the possibility of getting what we desire, when life denies the opportunity to have the things we love, we feel nothing but pain, our heart tears apart, and we cannot find any reason enough as to justify such sacrifice. You keep reminding yourself that everything happens for a reason, but the truth is, for you that reason seems to be non-existent, hard to discover, or has no sense at all, and days keep passing and you keep yourself immerse in that sorrow that sinks you to the depths of darkness.

“You never know what worse luck your bad luck has saved you from.” – Cormac McCarthy

The truth is, that reason, eventually becomes visible.  The things that happen to us, the things that we were not able to get, are not a mere casualty, but it was meant to be that way, because life in fact, is not about luck, life is not a fortune wheel where some of us obtain better things than others, it may seem this way, but the truth is, we create our own luck, and if life doesn’t give to us something we want is because is giving us the chance to broaden our limitations, recreate ourselves anew, and become the source of our own luck.

If I look back into my past, some of the things that happened to me seemed first as bad luck, but now in the present, I see them as good luck. Why? Because from the point of my life where I am standing right now, looking back into my past, I can see that if I would never have had those moments of “bad luck” my life would be different from the one that I have now, and the things I have achieved so far, I wouldn’t have achieved them without those moment of “bad luck” I had in my past.

“Every time I thought I was being rejected from something good, I was actually being re-directed to something better.” – Steve Maraboli

You can be a victim of your own circumstances, you can accept that luck is not in your favor, and succumb to adversity, surrendering the control of your own life, becoming a slave of your “bad luck” and be at mercy of fate, or you can decide to recreate your story, knowing that any moment of “bad luck” hides within itself the opportunity to obtain a greater luck, because in the end, if we are patient, if we don’t lose hope, if we give life time to prove us wrong about our own luck, if we decide to move forward and reinvent ourselves to recreate our destiny, we will discover the reason for that previous bad luck and we will thank God and life for all those moments where we didn’t get what we want, because that put us to the edge, took us from our comfort zone, and made us discover a new path, a new way, a new life, a new version of ourselves.

Some doors are meant to be closed, some are closed that so we can find a way to open them again, and some are closed so that we can find the way to those that will lead us to something better. Trust that everything happens for a good reason, and your faith will help create the fact, and your commitment and perseverance will shape your destiny and create your own luck.

Adversity: An Opportunity for Personal Development

Is in the moments of difficulty when a man can find the way to the discovery of his greatest self. When adversity knocks our door, we have different options:  We can embrace it and transform it into an opportunity for personal development, we can let it rule our feelings, emotions and our daily lives, limiting our possibility for development, growth and evolution, or we can do nothing about it, letting a great opportunity pass. What we choose to do in the face of adversity will determine our defeat or our victory.

"It is your reaction to adversity, not the adversity itself, that determines how your life’s story will develop." - Dieter F. Uchtdorf

The truth about adversity is that it possess within a seed that contains the key to our own personal growth. In those moments in our lives, when our external circumstances change, sometimes abruptly, sometimes expecting it, sometimes not, and adversity crosses our path, we feel lost, we feel confused, we do not know what to do, and we scream, we cry, it paralyzes us, and we get stuck. From one moment to another, adversity becomes real, the pain becomes real, but there is also an opportunity in all that struggle that becomes real. An opportunity to grow, to improve ourselves, to evolve and to become the best version of ourselves.

Adversity will challenge us, will make us suffer, will create chaos in our lives, it will make our world tremble, but it will push ourselves forward, it will stretch us to a point that will make us exceed our own limits, and will discover the greatness that we all carry within. We cannot avoid adversity, but we can embrace it and take the most out of it, and once again, the way to do that is by seeing it as an opportunity for spiritual growth and personal development.

“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.” – Maya Angelou

It is through the phase of adversity when one can reach its maximum potential. One day I was doing a tour in a winery and I remember when the guide told us about the vineyards located in high altitude. I am not a professional in the area but for what I learned, these vineyards produce a high quality wine, and the particular taste of this wines is caused by different factors, as temperature, the characteristics of the soil, thermal amplitude, and sunlight intensity. The grapes in those vineyards are exposed to different factors and they struggle to survive, and through adversity they develop a variety of exceptional characteristics that produce a unique wine.

What I learned about them? That if we not succumb, if we not surrender, but rather if we rise and face adversity with courage, commitment and perseverance, we will overcome adversity, becoming a better version of ourselves. It all depends on how we react in the face of adversity. It is our attitude and not our current circumstances what really shape our destiny. We cannot change what happened to us, but we can change the way we react to it.

“In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity.” – Albert Einstein

Are we going to let it kill us, or are we going to do everything we can in order to transform it into an opportunity to become the best version of ourselves? Adversity can transform our lives into a hell, but that hell, no matter how horrible it is, cannot define who we are without our consent. You are the only one who can define who you really are. Your thoughts and your actions will give you a certain experience, and that experience will create your reality.

See the opportunity in every difficulty, and transform adversity into an opportunity to become the best version of yourself. Try to see everything with a different perspective, think positive thoughts, learn, improve yourself, do not give up, have faith, stay strong, do everything you can in order to change your reality, and you will become your own hero!

It is Time to Build your Own Dreams!

A new year has begun. A new opportunity is awaiting you. The past is gone, and the present is all we have. In this given moment we have the chance to begin again, and the opportunity to create something new, or to dream a new dream, or to do something we have never done, and we have the big opportunity to create the life we have always imagined. In this new year, are you going to begin to create your dream or continue building it? or are you going to lose another opportunity to make your dreams come true? Now is the right time to start building your dreams and create the life you have always imagined!

"If you don't build your dream someone will hire you to help build theirs." - Tony A. Gaskins Jr

The celebrations are over. The New year’s eve has past. We have celebrated with our family and friends, and we welcomed this new year with hope and enthusiasm. We started the new year full of feelings and emotions, full of hope and optimism, full of new dreams, goals and desires. The first couple of weeks we feel motivated, we are full of enthusiasm, and something about this new year makes us believe that this will be the year that we will make all the things we have always wanted to do.

We start living the first month of this new year with happiness and passion, hopeful and full of faith. But as time goes by, all those beautiful emotions we had on New Year’s eve, all hopes, dreams, desires, all enthusiasm and optimism start to fade away. We begin to immerse ourselves in the darkness of our daily routines and day after day our dreams begin to go back to the drawer of oblivion. An a couple of months later, all those wonderful feelings we once had are replaced with stress, despair, tiredness, and frustration.

“What this power is I cannot say; all I know is that it exists and it becomes available only when a man is in that state of mind in which he knows exactly what he wants and is fully determined not to quit until he finds it.” – Alexander Graham Bell

Then, the year ends and now we do begin to dream again, we believe that the new year will bring us all the things we have always wanted, and once again, all those emotions we once had, begin to appear once again in our hearts putting us in the most wonderful of the states. But I wonder, is this kind of life that looks like if we were living on a roller coaster the meaning of life, the purpose of our existence? Is that our destiny? Once again, as an unstoppable dreamer that I am, I have to say no. Life is something we create, with our thoughts, and actions and with the attitude we adopt day by day.

Therefore, we should not wait any longer to start building our dreams. Life goes fast and if we are not careful we will end up building someone else’s dreams and we will call that “our job” protecting it more than our own dreams. The truth is that this system was created in a way that it makes it almost impossible to live without it. It made us so dependent, that we normally tend to deny all our own dreams because we have the need to serve this system in order to survive. The good news are that we can find the way to depend less from it and be more free, and the way to do it is by finding the time to build our own dreams.

“A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.” – Colin Powell

A day has 24 hours, a week has 168 hours, and a month has around 730 hours, and that means we have always time to do at least one thing per day that will push as closer to our dreams. Therefore, we should start by discovering our dreams and goals and set up all the steps we need to do along the year to make them a reality. How do we increase the chances to make that happen? By doing more of what will push us closer to them and doing less of the things that don’t serve us. For example, watching less television, spending less time doing nothing, spending less money on things that we don’t need, and so on. Remember that all those people who have created the life they have imagined, have had the same amount of time than you. It is all a matter of priorities. No matter how busy you are, or how much work do you have, use any spare time to build you dreams.

Do little, do much, but never stop doing. Use the time that God has given you in your favor and not against. The key is to start now, wherever you are, with whatever you have. Start building your own dreams before you end spending all your life building other people dreams. Go out and create the life you dream!

2017: A New Year, A New Opportunity, A New Beginning

We can almost see it, the 2017, the new year is about to arrive. It carries a big suitcase, and it is loaded with hopes, opportunities, challenges, adventures, goals, dreams and more. And I believe we all wonder the same questions… What thing in that suitcase has my name on it? What will the future hold? The answer is simple: The 2017 will bring us what is best for us and all those things that we are ready to receive. Are your arms open? Is your heart open? Are you ready to accept the new opportunities of this new year?

We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day

Every new year comes with new opportunities and challenges for every one of us. They come in different shapes, colors and sizes. They come in different ways and in different times, and we all receive at least one opportunity to improve our lives, to discover our true self, to develop our character, to become the best version of ourselves, to grow, to evolve. Those are purposes of these opportunities and challenges.

I said that this 2017 will bring us what is best for us and what we are willing to receive. What I mean with this is that God and life are always ready to give us what is best for us, that is to say, all the new opportunities that will push ourselves forward. The problem is that we are not always willing to receive the gift of a new challenge. The reason could be because of fear, doubts, uncertainty, maybe because we prefer to stay in our comfort zone or because the gift is not to our liking. So, we refuse to accept the new opportunities, letting them go, losing our chance to improve, develop, grow and evolve.

“Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering ‘it will be happier’…” – Alfred Tennyson

The new year can bring positive and “negative” things. With positive I mean a new job, a new relationship, an increase in your salary, a new trip, any kind of material possession, the achievement of a goal, a dream come true, a new home, another child, or any other positive thing that could happen to us. And with “negative” I mean those kinds of things that are opposite to the ones we call positive. For example, the loss of a job, more debts, the end of a relationship, the loss of any material possession, failure in any aspect of our lives.

What do we all want in this new year? We want more of the positive things and less of the negative ones. But what if the negative things have also a meaning? What if they happen for a reason that we do not yet comprehend? Well, the truth is that they also have a special meaning. The key is to discover its purpose, it could be for example, to make us learn a new lesson, or improve ourselves, to give us the chance to have better things, or simply because they want us to develop the greatness that is within us.

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” – Viktor E. Frankl

Always remember, that it is not what happens outside of us, that is to say, our external circumstances what really matters, but how we respond to those circumstances is what matters the most. Regardless of what happens to us, at any given moment we have the opportunity to decide how we are going to feel and how are we going to respond to what is happening. Therefore, face this new year with courage and optimism, be ready to receive the new gifts of this 2017. When a new opportunity, whether positive or not so positive knocks at your door, take it, and give your best to create the outcomes you expect. Always remember that no matter what happens, you are the creator of your own destiny!

Let’s say goodbye to this wonderful 2016 that is about to end with happiness and gratitude, because no matter what happened, we survived and nobody can take from us the lessons we learned, the wonderful moments, and all the things we got from it. Let’s keep the good memories, the important lessons, and take them with us in this new year. Leave behind what doesn’t serve you, and with hope, courage and enthusiasm receive this 2017 with your arms open. Be ready to face any challenge, do not surrender in the face of adversity, transform the negative into positive, use any circumstance in your favor, and never lose the opportunity to create the life you imagine!

A new year is coming, and this 2017 brings 365 new opportunities, and if we are ready to take them they will help us become the person we are meant to become so we can create the life we yearn, the one we deserve and the one we are capable of living.  Happy New Year!

Life Goes On Like The Flowing River

Life is like a river, it is always flowing, it can flow slowly or it can flow quickly, it can change courses but nothing can stop the river from flowing. The same happens with life, there are no external circumstances that can stop it from flowing. One thing is sure: Life always goes on. We have different options: We can go with the flow and move on with life, we can stay still like a rock while life passes over us or we can fight against the current. Are you going to move on with life to a better future or will you stay stuck in that dark and hopeless place? You create your own luck, you create your future, you choose.

in-three-words-i-can-sum-up-everything-ive-learned-about-life-it-goes-on-robert-frost

No matter what happens in your life, it always goes on. According to Wikipedia the earth has 4.6 billion years but life on earth started a little bit later around 3.8 billion years ago, and humans has been on earth only a few hundred thousand of years ago. From the beginning there have been a lot of different circumstances that affected life on earth in many ways, but in one way or another it always managed to move on.

Since they are born humans go through a lot of different circumstances throughout their lives. Like a river faces different external conditions, so does life, and so we are exposed to many changes throughout our lives. These kind of changes have different impacts on a person’s life, it doesn’t really depend on the circumstance but it depends on the way a person reacts to that particular circumstance.

“When the pretty birds have flown, and you feel hurt and alone, be strong and carry on, and remember that life goes on.” – Mouloud Benzadi

In this beautiful and sometimes turbulent river called life there will be different situations along the way, sometimes the external conditions will be favorable for us and it will push us forward in the streams of life but sometimes they will not be favorable and like a very hard punch in the face it will hit us making us fall, and we are going to feel nothing but pain. But it will paralyze us? It will destroy us? The truth is there is no answer, because we determine the answer according to our reaction to what happened and our following actions. But is it possible to move on? Yes, definitely.

Whatever has happened to us there is no way we can go back to the past and change it. No matter how hard we fight with the current, we will never go back to the point we want to get in order to change something, therefore the only way we can do something to change our current situation is to move forward. Our present is the place where we create the foundations of our future. Every day of your life you can decide to start again.

“Accidents happen. Our bones shatter, our skin splits, our hearts break. We burn, we drown, we stay alive.” – Moïra Fowley-Doyle

We can fight with the current and end up being exhausted, we can refuse to move on, staying stuck in a miserable life forever or we can decide to move forward at the rhythm of the current. Life always goes on and we have the power to decide what to do with our own lives. Are we going to let an external situation whatever it is to define us? To paralyze us? To destroy us and all our goals and dreams? Or are we going to be the creators of our destiny believing in God, believing in ourselves? We decide. Life with or without us will go on.

Nothing will remain as it is, life flows like a river, it changes, it evolves. It always goes on, and if we move forward with it, no matter how dark it is at the moment, always remember that the sun never disappears, it only hides, and sooner or later the bright of a sunny morning will come through your window.

Leave the past, live the present, create your future and always move forward in the direction of your dreams!

Taking Things for Granted: When the Important Things Become Invisible

The more we see something the more invisible it becomes to us. We take for granted things that we once desired, things that are essential for our well-being, valuable things, treasures, wonderful things and extraordinary people who enriches our lives. The problem is that the consumption society in which we live has made us blind. We have lost all sense with what is really important, and we have focused all our energy in less important things. The funny thing is we always realize how important something was when we lose it.  That is the moment when we learn to give something the value it deserved.

"It's not a bad idea to occasionally spend a little time thinking about things you take for granted. Plain everyday things." - Evan Davis

Once upon a time there was a magic world. It was full of wonders and treasures. It was so perfectly designed that only an expert craftsman could have made such a wonderful piece; it was so beautiful, so magnificent, so extraordinary… It was the best masterpiece ever created. This paradise called “Earth” was compound of minerals, water, mountains, oceans, trees, flowers, beautiful lands, lakes, beautiful creatures, fruits, seeds, vegetables, and above you could see during the day a blue sky, and a big sun or water falling from the sky, or wonderful snowflakes, and during the night you could see a shiny moon, and a dark night full of stars.

This world still exists; it is the world you live in. It is the jewel in which you are standing right now, a paradise that you missed by being too focused on other less important things. When was the last time you actually stopped everything you were doing and you contemplated what this world has to offer? When was the last time you enjoyed all the treasures of this planet? So many beautiful colours, aromas, flavours, sounds and textures and we took them for granted, how can we be so blind?

“The more often we see the things around us – even the beautiful and wonderful things – the more they become invisible to us. That is why we often take for granted the beauty of this world: the flowers, the trees, the birds, the clouds – even those we love. Because we see things so often, we see them less and less.” – Joseph B. Wirthlin

The main problem with us is that we are constantly craving things that we do not have, but we always forget the things we already have. Once we get what we want, another thing takes its place, and the thing we wanted in the first place quickly loses its value. This not only happens with material things, but with everything around us. We take for granted material possessions, we take for granted the food we eat, the water we drink, we take for granted our health, we take for granted the people we love, we take for granted the nature around us, and we take for granted our time on this earth.

It turns out that I smile a lot, and in these moments that is something unusual. I remember someone who once asked me: Why are you always smiling? To which I replied: because life is beautiful, and with a smile he nodded. I mean how could I not smile? Simply look around you. We have everything we need, life is more wonderful than hundreds of years ago, everything is much simpler, we live in a world of opportunities, and still we insist on being sad and angry either because we always search for more things we do not need, or because we are attached to things we no longer have, while we belittle the things we have.

“We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.” – Cynthia Ozick

The real problem of taking things for granted is that we forget to take care of them running the risk of losing them. That is why our planet is in jeopardy and with that our own existence, because we are so used to its beauty, so used of its existence, so used to its resources of water, air, and life that we are not paying attention to the damage we are causing to it. We take for granted our health that is why we not take care of our body putting in risk our own lives. We take for granted our family and that is why we forget to see them not knowing that one day they will not be here, we take for granted our partners that is why we do not give them the love they deserve forcing them to leave us. We take for granted our time, that is why we do not spend it on things that really matter, depleting the most important thing we have.

Close your eyes for a minute and imagine how your life would look like if you didn’t have the things you already have. Your family gone, friends gone, the person you love gone, the things you possess gone, your health gone, no more sun, no more rain, no more mountains, the trees gone, the birds and all animals extinct, your house gone, imagine that there is no water left nor food, no more air to breathe, no more of the things you once had, no more freedom, no more time.

“There’s a lot that is good in your life-don’t take it for granted. Don’t get so focused on the struggles that you miss the gift of today.” – Joel Osteen

That would be a nightmare, isn’t it? Do you want to know something? There are people who are already experiencing that nightmare. Here on this earth, while you take for granted all the things you have and you suffer for the things you don’t, there are people with less that you have, and if we are not careful with our actions, if we do not stop polluting our planet, killing every animal, cutting every tree, if we do not end with every war, this nightmare will become true, and we will lose it all, and thus we will realize that the things we took for granted, were the things that made our heart beat.

Let’s take at least 30 minutes a day to contemplate and be grateful for all the things we have. Let’s stop what we are doing and enjoy the company of our loved ones, let’s admire the nature around us, let’s enjoy the essential and wonderful things of our daily lives. Life is a wonderful place, you only need to become aware of it, enjoy it, love it, and protect it!

Be here, be present, enjoy the moment, be grateful with what you have, and smile because you can!

Our Need for Security

One of the things that people constantly seek, either consciously or unconsciously is security. We have the need to feel safe because that guarantees us our survival. Certainty makes us feel comfortable, while uncertainty makes our world tremble, putting us in a place of extreme vulnerability. This need for security can truly guarantee us our very existence, it will make us feel comfortable, it will make us feel safe. But does it really guarantees us freedom, peace, happiness, success and everything we might want in life? Stay with me, and let’s find out together!

"No amount of security is worth the suffering of a mediocre life chained to a routine that has killed your dreams." - Maya Mendoza

We always seek for security because we think that it will give us freedom, we believe that having a lifetime security will mean having a lifetime freedom, a lifetime happiness, or a lifetime success. We think that it will guarantee us true success, we think that we will be free to do everything we love and make all our dreams become a reality. A lifetime security is possible when we choose to live a life inside our comfort zone, a place where we feel safe and at ease.

While living in our comfort zone, can bring us security and give us the idea that we are free, happy and successful, it is in fact only an illusion. Why? because choosing a lifetime security only enslaves us, taking us all our freedom. When we put security as priority over our dreams, that is when we become prisoners of a system that teach us that the only thing that matters is a lifetime security, it told us that dreams are impossible or that they are not worth the risk. So, we look for security in every aspect of our lives: we look for a job security, for a house, a car, and everything that will make us feel safe, we don’t question anything, we simply settle.

“Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.” – John F. Kennedy

But what is wrong about this? Why is wrong to look for security? what is the problem of living in our comfort zone? There is no problem at all. In fact, it is in our own instincts, it is in our very nature as human beings. The problem only starts when we settle to a life that is far less than the one we are capable of living, limiting our own extraordinary capabilities. The problem is when we achieve a life that gives us security, and that stop us from achieving more. We become so dependent on that life, that we fight to protect it against everything including our own dreams, because our dreams are always a threat to our security.

That is the reason why so many people give up on their dreams. The fear of leaving the place of conformity to enter to unknown territories scares them to the point that they decide to stick to their ordinary life, where they are comfortable and they feel safe. And if you want to achieve the life we have always imagined, if we want to make all our dreams become a reality, we will have to be ready to feel uncomfortable. That place of security will bring us everything we need to survive, but the life we want, and truly deserve, it is only possible outside our comfort zone.

“The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.” – Michelangelo

Most of the people who have already achieved their dreams, or those people who are known for being extremely successful, have one thing in common: They were in a place of absolutely uncertainty when they decided to go for their dreams. Therefore, we can see that actually our place of security, our comfort zone is what truly limits us, because it makes us feel safe, so we do not do anything in order to not lose that security we have. It is only when we are in a place of mystery, uncertainty, and discomfort when our true character is shaped. It is in that moment that we become free to become the person we were meant to be and do everything we have always imagined.

May your need for security do not limit you from living the life that you are capable of living. Do not settle for a life that you do not love only because it gives you security. You can, and you will live the life of your dreams if you dare to leave your comfort zone!

Is Life a Competition?

Since we were children we are taught to compete. Day after day the habit of competing with others is shaped. When we less expect it that habit is created, and our whole life becomes a competition, a competition where we need to beat others in order to be successful. But is life really a competition? Do we need to compete in order to be successful? It is the act of competing with others what give us true victory? Can the result of a competition really define a human being? Let’s find out together more about competition, its definition, level of importance and impact on human beings.

According to the dictionary, a competition is “a situation in which someone is trying to win something or be more successful than someone else” In other words, we can define competition as being an opportunity to get a special prize that might have a special significance, or the opportunity to defeat others to declare oneself as being more successful or superior than someone else. Therefore, does this mean that we must focus on defeating others to be successful? It is by doing so, that one truly achieves victory? It is true that through competing with others one evolves, becomes superior, and achieves greatness?

Well, that will depend on the way we see it, that is to say, our own perspective, belief and idea of what a competition truly means. Two different beliefs are going to determine the true meaning of competition and the answers to those questions: 1. The belief that life is a competition, where you have to defeat others in every possible aspect of your life. 2. The belief that life is not a competition at all, and if there is one competition that is with the person you were yesterday.

“The only competition worthy of a wise man is with himself.” – Washington Allston

The first belief will define competition as the possibility to beat others to be successful, believing that through defeating others one gets true victory, what makes them more superior, what makes them evolve, and so achieve greatness.  The second belief will define competition as being merely the chance to be better than you were yesterday, believing that one is successful, evolves and achieves greatness by becoming the best version of oneself.

The people who have the first belief will focus on winning others. That will be their maximum goal, beating others will become their main desire, and the defeat of others will be their victory.  Those who have the second belief will focus on being better than they were yesterday, and becoming the best version of themselves will be their ultimate goal, and victory for them will mean being the person they were meant to be without needing to defeat others for being so.

“You are never really playing an opponent. You are playing yourself, your own highest standards, and when you reach your limits, that is real joy.” – Arthur Ashe

As we can see competition is a word that can have many different meanings. The true is that nowadays people have accepted the first belief, because that is what this society taught us. It taught us that we need to compete, and in every competition, we have to win others in order to be successful. And this is not about sports, this is not a simple game, this is about life. Somehow, they transformed life into a competition. We compete not to become the best version of ourselves, but to simply defeat others, what gave us a wrong idea of life.

Every aspect of our life has become a competition. In every place there is an ongoing competition: In workplaces, schools, universities, homes, neighborhoods, bars, parks, and every corner of this world. We compete to see who has the best car, smartphone, house, clothes, shoes, we compete to see who has the best body, who looks better, who is more beautiful, we compete to see who has the best job, the best position, the best salary, we compete to see who has the best grades, or the most important degree, or anything that will put us in a “high status position”,  we compete to see who has the best birthday, wedding, funeral, it doesn’t matter, the fact is that we have to be better than others, that gives a fake sensation of happiness and success, that seems to fill our empty souls.

“Real learning comes about when the competitive spirit has ceased.” – Jiddu Krishnamurti

But, do we ever feel complete? No, not really, and that is why we never stop competing. We desperate need to be better than others to feel successful. What we don’t know is that the only person we need to be better than is the person we were yesterday. Being the person we were meant to be, doing the things we love without needing others approval, without needing to beat others, gives us freedom, and that makes us truly successful, that is how you really win this competition called “Life”, which in fact is not a competition at all, or not against others, but a competition against the person we were yesterday. Winning this game, means defeating the person that we are not, becoming the person that we really are, and that means becoming the best version of ourselves.

If you want to improve yourself, to develop your true potential, if you want to succeed at life, you will have to fight to become the person you are capable of becoming, if you believe in yourself and you think you are good enough to be the person you have imagined, then there is no need to compete with others, because you will realize that you don’t have competition, and if you don’t have competition, against whom are you going to compete with?

Life is not a competition, and if there is one competition, that is against ourselves. We create our own success by exceeding our own standards not by defeating others. So let’s go out and become the best version of ourselves!

Becoming the Person You Were Meant to Be

Most of the time we give up on life, refusing to become the person we are capable of becoming either because we think that we have miss the opportunity to do so or because we do not believe we can aspire more. We condemn ourselves to live the rest of our lives being the person we are not, believing that we would never become the person we were meant to be for any reason we may have, but the truth is it is never too late to become the person we were meant to be.

"It is never too late to be what you might have been."

Some people know from the very beginning of their lives what they want to do and who they want to become, and they do everything they can in order to become the person they want to become. Some succeed at it, others are still trying. Some people didn’t know what they wanted to and who they wanted to become, and suddenly, magically they realized what they wanted to do, and who they wanted to become, and they did everything in order to achieve it. Some of them succeed at it, some are still trying.

Then there are those people who don’t know at all what they want to do and who they want to become, but they never give up, they never settle, then there are those who may know what they want or not at all but they gave up, they accepted life as it was presented to them, living a life they don’t want, being the person they are not. They refused to keep trying, condemning themselves to a life of failure.

“The first step toward success is taken when you refuse to be a captive of the environment in which you first find yourself.” – Mark Caine

I always thought that I was a complete failure; a few years ago I realized I was not. When I was a teenager my life was kind of a disaster. I never fitted in, and I hated myself for that. I was never the kind of girl with lots of friends at school, in fact, I was the one everyone laughed at. I wasn’t the cool kid, the pretty one, the badass or the smart one; I was the shy girl, always sitting in the back of the classroom, crying always in silence. I had no friends, my grades at school were a disaster, my relationship with my family was a complete mess, and the relationship with myself was terrible. I was my worst enemy. I blamed myself for not being capable of being the person that everyone was expecting me to be, always trying to be, always failing at it.

I didn’t know at all what I wanted to do or who I wanted to become, and if I had a small idea, I always destroyed it quickly, simply because I thought I wasn’t good enough, I believed I was a failure, but I wasn’t. I was being the person I needed to be, because that person shaped the person I am now. Today, after 27 years I can say that now I know what I want and who I want to become. I might not be there yet, but oh man, one lesson I had from life is: “Never give up, you never know what you can miss if you do, and if you give life a chance, it will surprise you.”

“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” – E.E. Cumings

I’m not the only one who has waited many years to realize their purpose, and I’m not the only one who is fighting to achieve it. There have been many people that didn’t find success until they were “old” for this society, that the older you are the obsolete you become. That’s bullshit, there is no right time to become the person you meant to be. The first important thing is to believe in yourself, know that you are capable of becoming anything you want, secondly discover your life purpose, and third do everything you can in order to achieve it. Do not worry about time, do not let it stop you.

If you still think that you are not capable of being the person you were meant to be for whatever reason you may have, I will show you a few examples of people who they were doing something completely different before becoming the person they were meant to be. A few examples:

At age 23, Oprah was fired from her first reporting job.

At age 24, Stephen King was working as a janitor and living in a trailer.

At age 27, Vincent Van Gogh failed as a missionary and decided to go to art school.

At age 28, J.K. Rowling was a suicidal single parent living on welfare.

At age 30, Harrison Ford was a carpenter.

At age 30, Martha Stewart was a stockbroker.

Samuel L. Jackson didn’t get his first movie role until he was 41.

Morgan Freeman landed his first MAJOR movie role at age 52.

And there are many other examples out there, just take a look at them, and then think again if it’s really too late to be the person you were meant to be.

“You are never too old to set another goal, or to dream a new dream.” – C.S. Lewis

Some people inherit success, others have to work hard to achieve it, but what really determines one’s success, is the ability to discover the reason of our existence, and live our life according to it. Being the best version of ourselves, doing what we love is the key to a fulfilled life. Do not settle with a life that is less than you deserve, it doesn’t matter where you are, who you are with, what you are doing, you can always become the person you truly want to become, do not let anyone say otherwise.

If you haven’t discovered what you want and who you want to become, don’t worry, if you don’t give up, sooner or later you will discover it. If you already know that but you feel you are far from achieving it, don’t worry, time is an illusion, if you don’t give up, sooner or later success will knock at your door.

Life Always Gives a Second Chance

The beauty of life is that always gives a second chance. At any given moment, life can surprise us with another chance, giving as the possibility to try something one more time, to recreate ourselves anew and to start again. The problem is that either we miss that chance by remaining attached to a past failure, to a story without a happy ending, or because we consciously deny accepting that chance, condemning ourselves to a life of failure. As always, life is made up of choices, and our success depends on seizing the chances that life gives us.

Life always offers you a second chance, It's called tomorrow. Nicholas Sparks

Our past could be full of failure, we could have made many mistakes, we could have made wrong choices, life could have taken away from us people we loved, and things we loved, relationships could have ended abruptly, we could have never succeed at having something or doing a special thing, the life we used to have could have vanished in the blink of an eye, we could have lost many things, but life is fairer than we think, because it always gives us a second chance, and sometimes even a third and a fourth, whether we deserve it or not.

No matter what happened in our past, and how many mistakes we have made, life will give us a second chance, but something we need to remember is that a second chance does not delete the consequences of our past. Any decision, behavior or action from our past will have a consequence, but a second chance means that we have the possibility to do things in another way. We can change ourselves for a better version; we can make different choices, learn from our mistakes, and do everything in a different way that will benefit us and everyone around us. That is exactly what a second chance is, the possibility to create a better tomorrow.

“If you are still breathing, you have a second chance.” – Oprah Winfrey

But what happens if I didn’t make anything wrong? What happens if life was simply unfair with me and has taken away from me something I loved? What happens when someone loses a loved one, or its job, or house or anything they really loved? What happens when somebody goes through a very painful situation? Will this second chance give us the possibility to get back what we used to have? Well that depends, sometimes a second chance doesn’t mean that we are going to have exactly what we used to have only because something better is waiting for us. I learned from my own experience that life never takes, without giving something in return. Sometimes things happen so we can have another chance to have a better life, and become the person we were supposed to become. That is why it’s important to believe in life, and wait for that second chance, to recreate our lives, because if we are living in the past, we will never have the opportunity to see this second opportunity, it will pass in front of our eyes, and we are going to be too blinded by our past to see it.

The key is to detach yourself from the past and everything that can’t be changed, and trust life and God that will give you a second chance, to a start a better life, to discover something about you that you didn’t know before, to see life in a different way, to become the best version of yourself, and to give you the life that you truly deserve. It is only a matter of giving life the chance to show us that wonderful things are waiting for us. If we’re breathing means that we are alive, and if we are live, opportunities are endless.

“Not everyone gets a second chance. If you do get one, take advantage of it because it’s a gift, and it may be something better than you had before!” – Nishan Panwar

Life will always give you a second chance, and when that happens, seize it, because this could be your very chance that will give you the life you are truly capable of living. Let go of the past, forget about the things you cannot change, focus on the things you can change, and learn from any mistake you have made, and when you have that second chance in front of your face don’t give it a second thought, simply take it and change your whole life!

Life wants us to succeed, the question is: do you want to succeed? Every day life will present us a second chance that will challenge us in every possible aspect of our life. That second chance could be the opportunity that will change your entire life, seize it!
