Doing The Things You Thought You Cannot Do

How many times have you said to yourself or others “I cannot do this”? How many times an idea in your mind was quickly erased by the words “I cannot do that”? How many times the idea of not being able to do something prevented you from moving forward? The truth is that just a simple statement like that one, with such simple words, can completely limit yourself, by closing every door to new challenges and opportunities. In order to move forward, we must do the things we thought we cannot do.

About doing the things we think we cannot do

You could have the best idea, or you could have been offered a wonderful new opportunity or experience, you could be in the middle of a challenging moment in your life, but if you let your mind to make you believe that you cannot do something then you will be limiting yourself, erasing from your life the opportunity to become stronger, more confident, the opportunity to experience something new, the opportunity to see how far you can get despite the fears. In order to erase that concept from your mind created by your fears, you will need to stop and look to the fears in the face, you will need to express to them “I am not afraid anymore” and you need to prove it by doing the things you once thought you couldn’t do.

It is important to overcome the most dangerous fear of all: The fear of failure. The fear of not being able to achieve what we want to achieve. We need to understand the fact that failure is not a dead-end but a detour. It only pushes us through a different path, and if we are committed enough as to keep moving forward we can use it as an advantage to become stronger and wiser, and sometimes what we learn along the way is more valuable and important to our success than the destination itself. Sometimes we even end up in a better place than the one we have imagined before. Therefore, do not fear failure and you would have taken already the first step towards doing the things you thought you cannot do.

“You always pass failure on your way to success.” – Mickey Rooney

The interesting part of doing the things you think you cannot do is learning that after you do them, you cease to be the person you used to be before, this change is inevitable, but it is rewarding because you not only become better, but you come to realize how capable you are, it gives you self-confidence, it widens your horizon and makes you realize that sometimes what we fear is not as bad as we thought it was, and even if we do not succeed, as I said before if you do not let failure to stop you but you embrace that failure and you use it as an advantage to improve yourself, then nothing can stop you.

In my life, I have learned that once you decide to look to your fears in the face then nothing can stop you. I have learned that deciding to do what you think you cannot do is the best way to make your fears disappear, and this becomes a lifestyle, you become stronger and confident and then nothing can stop you. I have tried, I have failed, I have tried again, but I have never ever let anything stop me from having new experiences, from learning something new, from becoming better. Challenges can be our best opportunity to reveal the best version of ourselves.  It is important to accept the fact that maybe we are not going to achieve what we want or maybe it is going to be more difficult than we thought, you need to learn to accept failure, become its friend, do not be afraid of it, and do not fear disappointment, if you are able to accept the life that were given to you and deal with the current circumstances with the best of your abilities then you will live your life in a completely different way.

“He who is not every day conquering some fear has not learned the secret of life.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

After high school I tried searching for a career that would make me happy, I went from wanting to be a police officer to a graphic designer, I failed both but I do not regret trying because now I know that both options were not for me and that took me to new and exciting paths. After that, I decided to start traveling, I was scared to travel thousands of kilometers to a new country with a totally different language, and  to learn a new language is very challenging, to be part of a new culture is also very challenging, it was tough and scary but rewarding at the same time, it opened many doors and change my life completely, now, at my 31 years of age I decided to go back to the University to study Psychology, perhaps I will fail or maybe I will be successful, probably will face my dear friend called “failure” again but that means that I am trying, that I am experiencing something new, that I am pushing the limits and that is living!

Last year I got my first road bike, I changed the pedals to those where you can click your fancy road bike shoes so your feet stay stuck on the pedals, on the first attempt I ended up in the floor like a bag of potatoes but I stood up and tried again until I got used to them. I started biking around, mainly from home to work sometimes just max 15km a day, and one day I decided to go around an island, around 94km. I said to myself “You are absolutely bananas!” but once again I decided to do the things I thought I couldn’t do. Worst case scenario I would just stop and turn back. In the end, I did it all the way to the end. It took me more than 5 hours, my legs were in such pain I could barely pedal, once I arrived I was so happy I started crying, I couldn’t believe that a person like me, a couch potato would do such a thing, but I did it and that changed everything. Now I do the same route like a piece of cake and I continue pushing my limits, and even though I wouldn’t pass the first stage of the Tour de France, if someone would ask me to join, I would definitely try, why? Because if you do not try to do the things you think you cannot do then you are not living your life to the fullest because even if you fail you will still gain something if you are willing to see failure not as a dead-end but an opportunity to learn something and to experience something new. Now I love biking and exploring beautiful places, I enjoy pushing the limits, I even bike at home to practice and become faster. This new passion, this new me, was the result of my decision to do the things I thought I couldn’t do.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So, throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – H. Jackson Brown Jr., P.S. I Love You

The same happened when I learned to ski last year, on the first day I fell every single time, I had bruises all over my body, but I kept pushing forward because I wanted to learn, I fell in love with skiing from the beginning even if it was painful, and that is the key to do something you think you cannot do,  you need to really want to do it, you need to like, enjoy and love what you are doing otherwise what is the point anyways? And after a few days, I got better and better and I found out a new passion! This year I even tried what is called “Ski Touring” where you go up the mountain with your skis on your feet and you go down skiing. I went up and down the mountains of different heights in different weather conditions. In the beginning, it was so difficult, I thought I would never ever try to go up a mountain on my own again, my heart was beating like crazy and I felt tired and frustrated but day after day I became better and better and being on the top of a mountain with that amazing view and going down feeling the snow under my skis is a wonderful sensation I got to experience thanks to the fact I decided to do what I thought I couldn’t do.

The thing is that if you don’t dare to do what you think you cannot do then you will never know what you could achieve and some things can only be achieved if you are willing to go through the pain and suffering of doing what you think you cannot do in order to achieve extraordinary things!

Do the things you thought you cannot do and explore new horizons, discover a whole new world of opportunities, and live your life to the fullest!

Our Need for Security

One of the things that people constantly seek, either consciously or unconsciously is security. We have the need to feel safe because that guarantees us our survival. Certainty makes us feel comfortable, while uncertainty makes our world tremble, putting us in a place of extreme vulnerability. This need for security can truly guarantee us our very existence, it will make us feel comfortable, it will make us feel safe. But does it really guarantees us freedom, peace, happiness, success and everything we might want in life? Stay with me, and let’s find out together!

"No amount of security is worth the suffering of a mediocre life chained to a routine that has killed your dreams." - Maya Mendoza

We always seek for security because we think that it will give us freedom, we believe that having a lifetime security will mean having a lifetime freedom, a lifetime happiness, or a lifetime success. We think that it will guarantee us true success, we think that we will be free to do everything we love and make all our dreams become a reality. A lifetime security is possible when we choose to live a life inside our comfort zone, a place where we feel safe and at ease.

While living in our comfort zone, can bring us security and give us the idea that we are free, happy and successful, it is in fact only an illusion. Why? because choosing a lifetime security only enslaves us, taking us all our freedom. When we put security as priority over our dreams, that is when we become prisoners of a system that teach us that the only thing that matters is a lifetime security, it told us that dreams are impossible or that they are not worth the risk. So, we look for security in every aspect of our lives: we look for a job security, for a house, a car, and everything that will make us feel safe, we don’t question anything, we simply settle.

“Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.” – John F. Kennedy

But what is wrong about this? Why is wrong to look for security? what is the problem of living in our comfort zone? There is no problem at all. In fact, it is in our own instincts, it is in our very nature as human beings. The problem only starts when we settle to a life that is far less than the one we are capable of living, limiting our own extraordinary capabilities. The problem is when we achieve a life that gives us security, and that stop us from achieving more. We become so dependent on that life, that we fight to protect it against everything including our own dreams, because our dreams are always a threat to our security.

That is the reason why so many people give up on their dreams. The fear of leaving the place of conformity to enter to unknown territories scares them to the point that they decide to stick to their ordinary life, where they are comfortable and they feel safe. And if you want to achieve the life we have always imagined, if we want to make all our dreams become a reality, we will have to be ready to feel uncomfortable. That place of security will bring us everything we need to survive, but the life we want, and truly deserve, it is only possible outside our comfort zone.

“The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.” – Michelangelo

Most of the people who have already achieved their dreams, or those people who are known for being extremely successful, have one thing in common: They were in a place of absolutely uncertainty when they decided to go for their dreams. Therefore, we can see that actually our place of security, our comfort zone is what truly limits us, because it makes us feel safe, so we do not do anything in order to not lose that security we have. It is only when we are in a place of mystery, uncertainty, and discomfort when our true character is shaped. It is in that moment that we become free to become the person we were meant to be and do everything we have always imagined.

May your need for security do not limit you from living the life that you are capable of living. Do not settle for a life that you do not love only because it gives you security. You can, and you will live the life of your dreams if you dare to leave your comfort zone!

Becoming the Person You Were Meant to Be

Most of the time we give up on life, refusing to become the person we are capable of becoming either because we think that we have miss the opportunity to do so or because we do not believe we can aspire more. We condemn ourselves to live the rest of our lives being the person we are not, believing that we would never become the person we were meant to be for any reason we may have, but the truth is it is never too late to become the person we were meant to be.

"It is never too late to be what you might have been."

Some people know from the very beginning of their lives what they want to do and who they want to become, and they do everything they can in order to become the person they want to become. Some succeed at it, others are still trying. Some people didn’t know what they wanted to and who they wanted to become, and suddenly, magically they realized what they wanted to do, and who they wanted to become, and they did everything in order to achieve it. Some of them succeed at it, some are still trying.

Then there are those people who don’t know at all what they want to do and who they want to become, but they never give up, they never settle, then there are those who may know what they want or not at all but they gave up, they accepted life as it was presented to them, living a life they don’t want, being the person they are not. They refused to keep trying, condemning themselves to a life of failure.

“The first step toward success is taken when you refuse to be a captive of the environment in which you first find yourself.” – Mark Caine

I always thought that I was a complete failure; a few years ago I realized I was not. When I was a teenager my life was kind of a disaster. I never fitted in, and I hated myself for that. I was never the kind of girl with lots of friends at school, in fact, I was the one everyone laughed at. I wasn’t the cool kid, the pretty one, the badass or the smart one; I was the shy girl, always sitting in the back of the classroom, crying always in silence. I had no friends, my grades at school were a disaster, my relationship with my family was a complete mess, and the relationship with myself was terrible. I was my worst enemy. I blamed myself for not being capable of being the person that everyone was expecting me to be, always trying to be, always failing at it.

I didn’t know at all what I wanted to do or who I wanted to become, and if I had a small idea, I always destroyed it quickly, simply because I thought I wasn’t good enough, I believed I was a failure, but I wasn’t. I was being the person I needed to be, because that person shaped the person I am now. Today, after 27 years I can say that now I know what I want and who I want to become. I might not be there yet, but oh man, one lesson I had from life is: “Never give up, you never know what you can miss if you do, and if you give life a chance, it will surprise you.”

“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” – E.E. Cumings

I’m not the only one who has waited many years to realize their purpose, and I’m not the only one who is fighting to achieve it. There have been many people that didn’t find success until they were “old” for this society, that the older you are the obsolete you become. That’s bullshit, there is no right time to become the person you meant to be. The first important thing is to believe in yourself, know that you are capable of becoming anything you want, secondly discover your life purpose, and third do everything you can in order to achieve it. Do not worry about time, do not let it stop you.

If you still think that you are not capable of being the person you were meant to be for whatever reason you may have, I will show you a few examples of people who they were doing something completely different before becoming the person they were meant to be. A few examples:

At age 23, Oprah was fired from her first reporting job.

At age 24, Stephen King was working as a janitor and living in a trailer.

At age 27, Vincent Van Gogh failed as a missionary and decided to go to art school.

At age 28, J.K. Rowling was a suicidal single parent living on welfare.

At age 30, Harrison Ford was a carpenter.

At age 30, Martha Stewart was a stockbroker.

Samuel L. Jackson didn’t get his first movie role until he was 41.

Morgan Freeman landed his first MAJOR movie role at age 52.

And there are many other examples out there, just take a look at them, and then think again if it’s really too late to be the person you were meant to be.

“You are never too old to set another goal, or to dream a new dream.” – C.S. Lewis

Some people inherit success, others have to work hard to achieve it, but what really determines one’s success, is the ability to discover the reason of our existence, and live our life according to it. Being the best version of ourselves, doing what we love is the key to a fulfilled life. Do not settle with a life that is less than you deserve, it doesn’t matter where you are, who you are with, what you are doing, you can always become the person you truly want to become, do not let anyone say otherwise.

If you haven’t discovered what you want and who you want to become, don’t worry, if you don’t give up, sooner or later you will discover it. If you already know that but you feel you are far from achieving it, don’t worry, time is an illusion, if you don’t give up, sooner or later success will knock at your door.

Our Greatest Limitations are Found in our Own Minds

There are no bigger limitations than the ones we create with our own minds. All the time, we are limiting ourselves through the limiting beliefs we put in our minds. Those limitations are most of the time an illusion, being the creation of our own thoughts, and they are only real inside the confines of our own minds. In order to achieve your desired dreams and goals, you will have to discover your own limitations, challenge them and exceed them!

"You are confined only by the walls you build yourself." - Andrew Murphy #limitations

Our imaginary limitations are the reason of our failure, if our dreams haven’t become a reality yet is because we have let them to stop us from achieving our desired dreams and goals. It is not our external limitations what makes us fail, but is our own limiting beliefs what really defeat us. The beliefs that we have in our mind about ourselves and life is what gives us our reality. It is our own misconceptions about our potential what truly limit us from achieving our goals.

The problem is that is easier for us to claim that we are being realistic when we say that we can’t do something, when in fact we are only using it as an excuse for not doing the things we would love to do. The truth is, if we haven’t done what we always wanted to do, if we haven’t gotten to the place where we have always wanted to get, if we haven’t reached our true potential or if we haven’t got the things we have always wanted to get is very probable that our own imaginary limitations have stopped us and paralyzed us, and that created our reality; but is not accurate to say that we are being realistic when in fact, what really stopped us was our own created limitations, and not our external circumstances. The problem it is not that we cannot do something, the problem is that we believe it.

“Limitations live only in our minds. But if we use our imaginations, our possibilities become limitless.” – Jamie Paolinetti

What I mean is that reality is relative, my reality can be very different from your reality, and I can have the same external limitations as you do, but I could create a different outcome, and what will make the difference is whether I decide to create my own limitations, believe them and let them stop me, or if I’m going to use them as way to improve myself. When you decide that nothing can stop you, you destroy any imaginary limitations about yourself and you recreate your beliefs about who you really are, what gives you the power you need to make everything become a reality.

If the environment in where we find ourselves would be a limiting factor, no one would have never reached their goals. If age, time, money, abilities, other people beliefs about you, criticism, your external appearance, momentary failures, past situations, the place where you have born, or any other condition would be a true limitation then this world only would belong to a few and the rest of us would be condemned to a life of misery, but that is not the true, but unfortunately is what is happening in this world, because most of the people have believed that only a few are touched with a magic wand, and they are the only ones who are able to reach success and touch the glory, we have accepted that concept as real and we gave up, and all thanks to the real limitations which are the ones that we have created with our own limiting beliefs.

“Limitations can only be true as long as we believe in them. Believe in yourself instead. Amazing things will happen.” – Doe Zantamata

There are people who have made their dreams become a reality with less than you have, there are people who have born in poverty, who have born with an illness, there are people who have been through very hard times, and they still have managed to achieve their dreams and goals. It wasn’t a matter of luck but a matter of willingness, and they didn’t let any limitations to stop them. If I have made many of my goals become a reality was because I didn’t let my external circumstances, but specially my own created limitations to stop me. And the key to make all your limiting beliefs disappear is by believing in yourself. There is no stronger force than believing you can reach your goals and desires no matter what obstacles appears in your life.

Discover your own limitations, find the way to exceed them and achieve all your goals and dreams. Because everything is possible for those who dare to dream and never ever give up. No matter how limited you think you are, if you believe you can, and if you never surrender to those limitations and you keep trying you will be victorious!
