2017: A New Year, A New Opportunity, A New Beginning

We can almost see it, the 2017, the new year is about to arrive. It carries a big suitcase, and it is loaded with hopes, opportunities, challenges, adventures, goals, dreams and more. And I believe we all wonder the same questions… What thing in that suitcase has my name on it? What will the future hold? The answer is simple: The 2017 will bring us what is best for us and all those things that we are ready to receive. Are your arms open? Is your heart open? Are you ready to accept the new opportunities of this new year?

We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day

Every new year comes with new opportunities and challenges for every one of us. They come in different shapes, colors and sizes. They come in different ways and in different times, and we all receive at least one opportunity to improve our lives, to discover our true self, to develop our character, to become the best version of ourselves, to grow, to evolve. Those are purposes of these opportunities and challenges.

I said that this 2017 will bring us what is best for us and what we are willing to receive. What I mean with this is that God and life are always ready to give us what is best for us, that is to say, all the new opportunities that will push ourselves forward. The problem is that we are not always willing to receive the gift of a new challenge. The reason could be because of fear, doubts, uncertainty, maybe because we prefer to stay in our comfort zone or because the gift is not to our liking. So, we refuse to accept the new opportunities, letting them go, losing our chance to improve, develop, grow and evolve.

“Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering ‘it will be happier’…” – Alfred Tennyson

The new year can bring positive and “negative” things. With positive I mean a new job, a new relationship, an increase in your salary, a new trip, any kind of material possession, the achievement of a goal, a dream come true, a new home, another child, or any other positive thing that could happen to us. And with “negative” I mean those kinds of things that are opposite to the ones we call positive. For example, the loss of a job, more debts, the end of a relationship, the loss of any material possession, failure in any aspect of our lives.

What do we all want in this new year? We want more of the positive things and less of the negative ones. But what if the negative things have also a meaning? What if they happen for a reason that we do not yet comprehend? Well, the truth is that they also have a special meaning. The key is to discover its purpose, it could be for example, to make us learn a new lesson, or improve ourselves, to give us the chance to have better things, or simply because they want us to develop the greatness that is within us.

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” – Viktor E. Frankl

Always remember, that it is not what happens outside of us, that is to say, our external circumstances what really matters, but how we respond to those circumstances is what matters the most. Regardless of what happens to us, at any given moment we have the opportunity to decide how we are going to feel and how are we going to respond to what is happening. Therefore, face this new year with courage and optimism, be ready to receive the new gifts of this 2017. When a new opportunity, whether positive or not so positive knocks at your door, take it, and give your best to create the outcomes you expect. Always remember that no matter what happens, you are the creator of your own destiny!

Let’s say goodbye to this wonderful 2016 that is about to end with happiness and gratitude, because no matter what happened, we survived and nobody can take from us the lessons we learned, the wonderful moments, and all the things we got from it. Let’s keep the good memories, the important lessons, and take them with us in this new year. Leave behind what doesn’t serve you, and with hope, courage and enthusiasm receive this 2017 with your arms open. Be ready to face any challenge, do not surrender in the face of adversity, transform the negative into positive, use any circumstance in your favor, and never lose the opportunity to create the life you imagine!

A new year is coming, and this 2017 brings 365 new opportunities, and if we are ready to take them they will help us become the person we are meant to become so we can create the life we yearn, the one we deserve and the one we are capable of living.  Happy New Year!

What is the true meaning of Christmas?

The year is almost over and with Christmas around the corner is easy to lose control. In this time of the year, specially the last days before Christmas people tend to be more stressed than relaxed. In these days, we have many things going in our heads, we are full of things to do, we need to organize everything with our families, prepare all the food possible, and one important task requires utmost urgency: Gifts. But why we truly celebrate Christmas? What is the true meaning of it?

“My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others.” - Bob Hope

For most people the first and most important thing to do before Christmas is to buy gifts. The little story about the old man who has a long white beard and is dressed in red and white made us believe that without gifts, Christmas is not Christmas. Therefore, it is necessary to buy gifts for all our friends and members of our family. So, it is time to go out to search and find them, but there is a little problem: Everyone left everything for the last minute as you did, and now you are trying to find gifts in a human tide.

The “Operation Gifts” becomes an impossible mission, there are a lot of people, endless queues, hundreds of different products at exorbitant prices, you don’t have enough time, and as you see the money flying from your wallet, and your card on fire, you know that it will be impossible to buy gifts for everyone. When you are about to lose hope, or go crazy, you find everything you “need” and you manage to go back home. Everyone put all the gifts in the Christmas tree, we celebrate, we eat, we drink, we open the gifts, and we say good-bye to Christmas until next year. But, what is the true meaning of Christmas?

“Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more!” – Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

Some people may think about Santa Claus and gifts, others about eating a lot of food and drinking, and some about having a good time with their families and friends or maybe all together, but it’s that all? Well, there is something more. Christmas is in fact the day we commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. Yes, I know. Most people know that. But, then why when the day comes, everyone forgets about it? I mean, imagine that is your birthday, everyone buys gifts, prepare food and gather together to celebrate it but you are not invited, in fact, nobody remembers about you. Sad, isn’t it?

Where do I want to go with this? That Christmas is a day to remember and commemorate the most wonderful thing that we have as human beings, and that my friends is called love. That is what Jesus taught us: To love unconditionally, to love with no boundaries, to love our neighbor as ourselves. Regardless if you are a believer or not, if you are going to celebrate Christmas, do not let Santa Claus, materialism and this society that made us addict to consumerism make you forget what is really important about Christmas: Love.

“Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.” – Hamilton Wright Mabie

Therefore, do not feel pressured by this society to buy the best and most expensive gifts, or to spend a lot of money in high amounts of food, do not feel stressed because you have the need to go to certain places and meet with people you don’t want to. Don’t even feel depressed because you are alone that day. Don’t feel sad because your kids are not getting any gifts, that is not the meaning of Christmas, that is what this society made us believe, because the real meaning of it is to be grateful, for the things we have, and for the opportunity to love and be loved. Enjoy this moment, regardless of your current circumstances. Simply raise your glass and make a toast for today you are alive!

What is the meaning of Christmas? To remember that love conquers hate. May today all our actions and thoughts, and all the things we eat, the music we hear and the things we say may reflect only love, for love is what saved us and what will save us forever. Merry Christmas!

The Battle Between Us and Our Past

Sometimes in a person’s life, a battle takes place between him and his past. This battle occurs in that person’s present. The past controls and conditions its present, and the person becomes the victim of its past, and his whole life is covered with suffering. But is the past the true cause of suffering? If this battle is real, how can we win?

the-secret-of-change-is-to-focus-all-of-your-energy-not-on-fighting-the-old-but-on-building-the-new-dan-millman

Imagine with me for a moment that we are witnessing a trial, a fictional trial. Today the court is going to dictate the sentence. The victim is a woman, and the defendant its past. The woman accused it for destroying her life. According to her, everything that happened to her and every person involved in her past have caused a permanent damage in her life. She expressed that her present has been conditioned by the things that happened or didn’t happened and by the persons that caused them. She claimed that her past is the first and only cause of all suffering she experiences in her present.

The trial takes place, and after several hours of debate, it is time for the verdict. After reviewing the case very carefully, the court makes a decision. The defendant is exonerated from all charges and the victim is found guilty and it is convicted to a life in prison, with the exemption that she will not be behind the bars, but she will be attached to the defendant, her past, for the rest of her life. Having a life of misery and despair.

“Too often, we carry around those things from our past that hurt us the most. Don’t let past pain rob you of your present happiness. You had to live through it in the past, and that cannot be changed, but if the only place it lives today is in your mind, then forgive, let go, and be free.” – Doe Zantamata

In this trial, the past is accused of causing suffering and permanent damage in this woman’s present. Then, why it is exonerated from all charges? How come the victim is declared guilty and the accused innocent? Because they are not judging situations, experiences and people of her past, they are judging it for causing pain in her present, and for the court the only cause of suffering of this woman in her present is herself, for the past itself can’t cause suffering in a place where it doesn’t exist, and it cease to exist in the present, the only one who can keep the past alive in the present is oneself in one’s mind, therefore, if we remain attached to it in our present, we are guilty of our present suffering.

When we become victims of our past, we immediately condemn ourselves to a life in prison. When we refuse to let it go by remaining attached to it, we take the role of victims, and in the end, the only thing we get is more and more suffering. The truth is, we cannot change what happened, no matter how painful it might have been, but we can change our present. We can decide to let go of the past, quitting the role of victims, and releasing ourselves from the hard sentence.

“Today is a new day. Don’t let your history interfere with your destiny! Let today be the day you stop being a victim of your circumstances and start taking action towards the life you want. You have the power and the time to shape your life. Break free from the poisonous victim mentality and embrace the truth of your greatness. You were not meant for a mundane or mediocre life!” – Steve Maraboli

Our past may have been our worst nightmare, we may have suffered, things in our past may have damaged us, people may have hurt us, and we can have all the right to feel victims, but by being a victim with all our resentment and hate we are not going to change what happened, nor we are going to feel better, but slowly and painfully those feelings will consume our own souls. Our past might never be of our liking, and maybe we will never overcome all the things that happened to us, but if we do not cease to be its victims, if we do not let it go, we will carry it as a burden in our backs, condemning ourselves to a life of misery.

It is a hard battle the one that is carried out between you and your past, but the victory is possible. To obtain it, to finally defeat it, there is a few things you need to do, but the first thing is to stop fighting with it. Let it go, accept it, forgive, let go of resentment, learn, those are useful things you can do to cease with your suffering. End this useless battle, and take back the control of your feelings, emotions and your entire life.

Stop being a victim of your past, letting it go, cutting all attachments to it, cleansing your body, soul and mind from all resentment, and starting again, only then you will heal your heart, end with all suffering and you will become free to start a new life!

Face your Fears!

At least once in our lives we will be challenged to face our fears in order to grow up, evolve, in order to get what we yearn, achieve our goals and make our dreams become a reality. The victory is not guaranteed, but if we let our fears win, if we refuse to leave our comfort zone, if we decide not to pursue our dreams, if we succumb to our fears, one things is guaranteed: Our own defeat and the death of our dreams. Therefore, if we want to make our dreams become a reality we should face all our fears!

Our fears have the ability to paralyze us. They create a burden between us and our dreams. They limit us, they stop us, they steal our hopes, they snatch our dreams. There are many reasons for which most of the people haven’t achieved their dreams and one of them is because of their fears. The fear of the unknown, the fear of losing something, the fear of failure, the fear of what people would think of them if they fail, or if they succeed. These and many other fears that have sabotaged our own dreams.

As I look back into my past I can see how many times I refused to do something I wanted to do, or I gave up a certain goal, or I stopped pursing a special dream and all because of my fears. “What if I can’t do it?” “What if I fail?” “What if I am not good enough?” “What would people think of me if I do it?” “What if I lose?” “What if, what if, what if…” I hear those questions resonating in my head as it was yesterday when I said them. That was not my true self speaking, those words were my fears speaking for me. “What if”: That is how fears start confusing ourselves, that is their language.

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt

Therefore, in order to face our fears and achieve all our dreams we must first detect when our fears have taken the control of our own minds. Why is important to do that? Because once we detect that our fears are controlling our thoughts, we can quickly take back the control and start thinking for ourselves. If we are not careful our fears will take the control of our minds and they will decide for us, and they will shape our destiny. We should face them and challenge them, and prove them wrong.

Life is like a box of chocolates, there are different shapes, different fillings, different tastes, some are sweet, some are bitter, you can like them all or only a few, but you end enjoying all the box. One thing is certain in this world: Nothing is sure, and you will never know the taste of what is inside the box until you begin to try it. For one moment to another our life could take an unexpected turn, and everything could change. Therefore, if we go safely, if we do not take risks, if we remain in our comfort zone we will never truly end enjoying our lives, we will simple exist, and all our dreams will be buried into oblivion.

“He who is not everyday conquering some fear has not learned the secret of life.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Most of the time our fears are not real. For example: Every time I turn off the light I think something horrible is going to appear, but it never happens. The reason is because what I imagine that is going to happen is not real, it is all in my mind. Our fears are founded by the environment where we were born. It happens with all our fears, and we can overcome them if we are willing to face them.

I was once afraid of spiders, one day I wondered why? Why I am so afraid of something that never did something to me? The problem is that I was programmed to fear them, I decided to overcome that fear, and I faced what I feared the most. It was hard in the beginning, but day after day my fear has started to vanish.

“Each of us must confront our own fears, must come face to face with them. How we handle our fears will determine where we go with the rest of our lives. To experience adventure or to be limited by the fear of it.” – Judy Blume

It happened with my fear of living in another country, with another culture and language. My fears tried to stop me, at some point they wanted to protect me, so they wanted me to stay in my comfort zone. One day I woke up, and I said to myself: “You know what, if you are going to fear something, fear the idea of living a miserable life for the rest of your life for not having pursued your dreams.” That day I silenced my fears, and I took the first step in the direction of my dreams. It is when you decide to face them, when your life gets another meaning. Do what you fear the most and grow, improve, reborn, evolve.

All your dreams, all the things you want, all your desires are on the other side of your fears. Don’t let them stop you, don’t let them snatch your dreams, face them, challenge them, and defeat them!

A Short Story About the Power of Understanding – Part II

In the previous part I started writing a little story that I imagined one night while I was watching the stars. This short story is about the power of understanding. It is a way to see how different everything could be if we could be less judgmental and more understanding with each other. Hope you enjoy it!

"Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves." - Carl Jung

He started seeing flashing images, they were passing quickly through his eyes like a movie. As the images were passing, he started to recognize the kid in the images, it was the life of this kid in little images. As they were passing, the little kid was getting older, and suddenly he recognized completely who it was: It was his neighbor, a shy and quiet boy of about 20 years of age. The man has always criticized and judged this boy, because he was different, he always referred him as the “suicide boy” because he was lonely and never smiled. The images keep passing through his eyes, until they stopped.

The man remained motionless for almost 15 minutes, and suddenly, he broke into tears. What he saw in those images was the 20 years of life of this boy. The magic about the shoes he tried was that not only made him see the life of the boy he always criticized but he could felt what he also felt in different moments of his life. He understood why he was the way he was. This boy has been through a lot of hardship in his short life. And in the present, he was taking care of her sick and drunk mother, because his father ran away when he was born.  Suddenly, he realized that this boy, his neighbor, was worthy of being respected.

He tried the second pair first, and afterwards the third pair of shoes, both fit him perfectly. He saw the images that appeared. Those two pairs were the lives of two different people he knew. People who he always criticized most of the time.  One was the life of the secretary of her boss. He always criticized her for the way she looked, the way she acted, the way she spoke, he always judged her because she was a very reserved and quiet girl, who looked like a nun. It turns out that this girl has suffered abuse from his father when she was a child, and she has been afraid of men ever since.

The third pair of shoes was the life of his father. He has always been very critic with him. His father was always a strict, cold and distant man. He didn’t know much about his father’s life, they never really had a relationship, and they haven’t talked in the last years. He always criticized his father for not being a good, loving and understanding father. But what he saw in those images broke his heart into pieces.

It turned out that his father has had a rough life. His grandfather, his father’s dad, was very severe with his son. He has been the only son out of 4 daughters, and his father was very hard on him, always receiving psychological and physical abuse from his part. “This will make you a man, and you are the only one, you must take care of your sisters”, he used to say. This man now understood that his father was the way he was because of his own father. He saw in the images that his father always took care of his 4 sisters after their father’s death, and he always took care of him. The man felt ashamed of himself for being so cruel with his father, because he was always distant and cold, but deep inside him he was good man. A father to be proud of.

The man feeling a mixed of emotions tried to find again an exit door, he also went to the front to see if he could open the door, but it was still locked. Tired and hopeless, he went back to the rear of the store. He realized that he hasn’t tried the fourth pair of shoes. Already feeling devastated he was afraid of what he could see in those last pair of shoes. His curiosity was stronger so he decided to try them on.

He started seeing the images passing through his eyes. Immediately he recognized the person in those images: It was himself, and those were his memories. He saw the person he was and he saw the person he has become. A selfish and judgmental person that has always been criticizing people without even knowing them. He started crying, he couldn’t recognize himself. “Who have I become?” He said with tears in his eyes. The images keep passing before his eyes. He couldn’t tolerate seeing himself in those images. He felt ashamed, and for a moment he even despised himself. “Please God I don’t want to be this person anymore, I can be better than this, I can change.” He cried out loud.

Suddenly, the images stopped. He took out the shoes. The lights went on, and he went to the front door. It was open. He went out the door and left the shop. He opened his eyes, he was lying on his bed, it was all a dream, a dream that came true. He wanted to change, God gave him hand. He reborn, he changed, he evolved, and his life was never the same again.

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” – John Watson

With this little story that I imagined in my mind, I could understand how different everything is when we get to know the story of a person. Once we know what they have been through, once we feel what they felt, everything changes. But do we need to go through that to be understanding and compassionate? The answer is no. We need to understand that everyone is fighting their own battler, becoming more understanding and less judgmental. We do not change people by criticizing them, nor we change our lives. We need less critics, and more people willing to become the best version of themselves so they can be ready to help others do the same. Together we can make this world a better place, it all starts with us and with the person we choose to be every single day of our lives.

The next time you criticize and judge others, try to put yourself in that person shoes first. Try to understand others as you would like them to understand you. Understanding is the key to a better world. Will you help create it?

A Short Story About the Power of Understanding

When it comes to criticize and judge others, we are all experts. Without mercy we go through life like judges criticizing and condemning others, but what would happen if we could spend the same energy we spend on judging others, in trying to understand them? Could it be possible that our understanding could change the way we see others? What if we would have the chance to walk in someone else’s shoes?

"Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves." - Carl Jung

A few days ago, in one of those beautiful summer nights where the sky is clear and full of stars, and the temperature is pleasant, I was quietly sitting on an armchair in my balcony gazing at the stars. For some reason, every time I look at the sky I start to reflect about a certain topic, as if there were something up there, probably God, watching me and whispering something to me. In that night I started wondering about how much people tended to criticize others. I think because we can’t cope with our own life, we tend to focus on others rather than ourselves to feel less miserable.

While I was thinking about it I imagined how would it be to walk in someone else’s shoes. How would it be for one moment be in someone else’s skin and see life through that person’s eyes, and feel what that person feels. I was thinking that probably would increase our understanding for others, and we would become less judgmental. Our hearts would open, and we would change the way we treat others, becoming more understanding and compassionate, having more empathy and being less ruthless judges.

“Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain but it takes character and self-control to be understanding and forgiving.” – Dale Carnegie

I always try to find examples that will help me clear my concerns. It is so that I imagined a little story about a man of about 30 years who used to criticize others constantly. It didn’t matter if you didn’t have reasons to criticize someone, this man always found a reason to criticize someone. Day and night, he was always criticizing and gossiping about other people, and no matter how annoying and despicable he was, he will always find followers who will applaud him.

One day, he went to a near shoe repair shop to collect one of the shoes he had left for repair. He entered into the shop, and suddenly a strong wind closed the door abruptly. He rang the bell, which was over the counter, to call the cobbler. No signs of him, he rang it one more time. He waited a few more minutes and decided to leave the store. He tried to open the door, but it was locked. “Maybe it was because of the wind” he thought. Tried a few more times without success.

“How will I get out? Maybe there is an alternative exit at the rear of the store” he thought. He went there to find a way to get out, and maybe he could also find the cobbler. As he was walking through the alley behind the counter the light slowly started to fade. Suddenly it was so dark he couldn’t see a thing. He was trying to find the light switch when something bright started shining. He went to see what it was, and he found four pair of shoes shining like stars.

He was amazed, he has never seen something like it. He took one of the shoes to see it closer, they were common shoes, but the light that shine through them with no apparently reason made them special. After seeing it carefully, he started using it as a lantern. He searched all around the place for the cobbler and the exit door. There were none of them. He searched every corner of that room, but there where no way out.

He decided to sit down and wait. “Maybe the cobbler went out to do something and he forgot to close the door, probably he will return soon” he thought. He waited half an hour, one hour, the cobbler never came. He was tired, hungry, and bored as hell. Where could he be? The man wondered. He took one of the shining shoes and tried it on, it was his size. He tried the other one. He stood up, and in that moment a miracle happened.

To be continued… 🙂

Life Goes On Like The Flowing River

Life is like a river, it is always flowing, it can flow slowly or it can flow quickly, it can change courses but nothing can stop the river from flowing. The same happens with life, there are no external circumstances that can stop it from flowing. One thing is sure: Life always goes on. We have different options: We can go with the flow and move on with life, we can stay still like a rock while life passes over us or we can fight against the current. Are you going to move on with life to a better future or will you stay stuck in that dark and hopeless place? You create your own luck, you create your future, you choose.

in-three-words-i-can-sum-up-everything-ive-learned-about-life-it-goes-on-robert-frost

No matter what happens in your life, it always goes on. According to Wikipedia the earth has 4.6 billion years but life on earth started a little bit later around 3.8 billion years ago, and humans has been on earth only a few hundred thousand of years ago. From the beginning there have been a lot of different circumstances that affected life on earth in many ways, but in one way or another it always managed to move on.

Since they are born humans go through a lot of different circumstances throughout their lives. Like a river faces different external conditions, so does life, and so we are exposed to many changes throughout our lives. These kind of changes have different impacts on a person’s life, it doesn’t really depend on the circumstance but it depends on the way a person reacts to that particular circumstance.

“When the pretty birds have flown, and you feel hurt and alone, be strong and carry on, and remember that life goes on.” – Mouloud Benzadi

In this beautiful and sometimes turbulent river called life there will be different situations along the way, sometimes the external conditions will be favorable for us and it will push us forward in the streams of life but sometimes they will not be favorable and like a very hard punch in the face it will hit us making us fall, and we are going to feel nothing but pain. But it will paralyze us? It will destroy us? The truth is there is no answer, because we determine the answer according to our reaction to what happened and our following actions. But is it possible to move on? Yes, definitely.

Whatever has happened to us there is no way we can go back to the past and change it. No matter how hard we fight with the current, we will never go back to the point we want to get in order to change something, therefore the only way we can do something to change our current situation is to move forward. Our present is the place where we create the foundations of our future. Every day of your life you can decide to start again.

“Accidents happen. Our bones shatter, our skin splits, our hearts break. We burn, we drown, we stay alive.” – Moïra Fowley-Doyle

We can fight with the current and end up being exhausted, we can refuse to move on, staying stuck in a miserable life forever or we can decide to move forward at the rhythm of the current. Life always goes on and we have the power to decide what to do with our own lives. Are we going to let an external situation whatever it is to define us? To paralyze us? To destroy us and all our goals and dreams? Or are we going to be the creators of our destiny believing in God, believing in ourselves? We decide. Life with or without us will go on.

Nothing will remain as it is, life flows like a river, it changes, it evolves. It always goes on, and if we move forward with it, no matter how dark it is at the moment, always remember that the sun never disappears, it only hides, and sooner or later the bright of a sunny morning will come through your window.

Leave the past, live the present, create your future and always move forward in the direction of your dreams!

Are You Committed to Change Your Life?

If we would spend the same amount of energy we spend on complaining on creating the life we want, how different our life would be. The problem is we are not always as committed on changing our lives as we are on complaining about the things we do not like about it. The good news is that the life we yearn, the things we want, and absolutely everything is possible, we only need to be willing to daily commit to create the life we want to experience. Are you committed to change your life?

"When confronted with a challenge, the committed heart will search for a solution. The undecided heart searches for an escape." - Andy Andrews

There are many things we may not like about our lives, but instead of doing something in order to change it, we spend our precious time complaining about the things we do not like. We tend to focus on the problem, and not in the solution. We surrender to a miserable life, instead of fighting for the life we really want. We do not commit to change our lives because we are already too committed on complaining about the different things in our lives that we despise.

Why? Because is easier that way, it is hard to change your life. It requires us to leave our comfort zone, which in fact is not so comfortable at all, but in this place we have everything we need to survive, so we refuse to do something to change our current situation, becoming the eternal complainers. But can you imagine how different our lives would be if we would simply decide to do something to change our lives? The first thing we need to know is that if we are not really committed on doing something in order to change it everything will remain as it is and nothing will change.

“Commitment is that turning point in your life when you seize the moment to alter your destiny.” – Denis Waitley

I found many times people being frustrated because they are upset with their jobs, or their current financial situation, people who are not happy with the things they are doing, with the career they have chosen, people who are unhappy with the relationship they are having with their partners, people who are depressed and sad because they are not living the life they want or doing the things they love, people who are unsatisfied with their health condition, people who is frustrated because they are failing in their tests at school or university, people who indeed have reasons to complain and feel miserable but people who haven’t done anything to change their lives.

I found myself many times being that kind of people, being the complainer not the doer. I always thought how easy my life would be if I could have the same luck as Aladdin and find a special lamp that I could rub so a genie can come out to offer me three wishes. Frustrated and disappointed because such a fantasy would never come true, I suddenly discovered that I could be my own genie. I mean, I always believed that God was ready to help me, so why I wasn’t doing anything to change my life? Because I never believed in myself. So one day I decided to become my own genie, quitting the habit of complaining, becoming the creator of my destiny.

“Commitment unlocks the doors of imagination, allows vision, and gives us the right stuff to turn our dream into reality.” – James Womack

You too can become your own genie in the lamp. The first decision you need to make is to decide what you really want and take the first step in the direction of your goal. They say Rome wasn’t built in a day, so don’t be discouraged if you can’t change your life overnight. If you are really committed to make it happen, and if you take the right steps towards your dreams, you will eventually turn your life around. Do you want different results? Change your actions! The same behavior will give us the same outcomes. You don’t like your job? Change it! You are not doing well at school or at college? Study more! You don’t have enough money? Spend less! You want to travel? Do it! I know, it’s not so easy as it sounds, but if you focus on finding the way to change the things you are not happy with, you will eventually do it! And the key is: commitment.

Focus on the solution, not the problem. Cease to complain and take the reins of your own life, and create new and better outcomes. When do you should start? Today! What do you do? Decide what you want. What to do next? Take the first step! It doesn’t matter what you do to begin, the thing is to begin. Start building the life you want with whatever you have right now, as you move forward you will encounter new opportunities, people who will be ready to help you, tools that will help you build your dream, and if you are truly committed, sooner or later, life will welcome you with a new tomorrow.

“Most people fail, not because of lack of desire, but because of lack of commitment.” – Vince Lombardi

It’s not so hard as it seems, in fact, is much simpler than we think. The key is to do what we have to do in order to make it happen, that is the only way to get what we want. Whatever we are unhappy with our lives right now, complaining won’t change anything. Sometimes we can easily fix what is going wrong with our lives but sometimes it will require from us a bigger commitment, and sometimes the only way to improve our lives, to get what we want, and have the life we desire is to make a complete radical change. Start now, start today, and step by step create the life you want to experience. Everything is possible for those who dare to dream and are committed enough to make it happen!

Don’t give up, don’t give in, create the life you believe in. If you are really committed to change your life, there is nothing that can stop you!

Taking Things for Granted: When the Important Things Become Invisible

The more we see something the more invisible it becomes to us. We take for granted things that we once desired, things that are essential for our well-being, valuable things, treasures, wonderful things and extraordinary people who enriches our lives. The problem is that the consumption society in which we live has made us blind. We have lost all sense with what is really important, and we have focused all our energy in less important things. The funny thing is we always realize how important something was when we lose it.  That is the moment when we learn to give something the value it deserved.

"It's not a bad idea to occasionally spend a little time thinking about things you take for granted. Plain everyday things." - Evan Davis

Once upon a time there was a magic world. It was full of wonders and treasures. It was so perfectly designed that only an expert craftsman could have made such a wonderful piece; it was so beautiful, so magnificent, so extraordinary… It was the best masterpiece ever created. This paradise called “Earth” was compound of minerals, water, mountains, oceans, trees, flowers, beautiful lands, lakes, beautiful creatures, fruits, seeds, vegetables, and above you could see during the day a blue sky, and a big sun or water falling from the sky, or wonderful snowflakes, and during the night you could see a shiny moon, and a dark night full of stars.

This world still exists; it is the world you live in. It is the jewel in which you are standing right now, a paradise that you missed by being too focused on other less important things. When was the last time you actually stopped everything you were doing and you contemplated what this world has to offer? When was the last time you enjoyed all the treasures of this planet? So many beautiful colours, aromas, flavours, sounds and textures and we took them for granted, how can we be so blind?

“The more often we see the things around us – even the beautiful and wonderful things – the more they become invisible to us. That is why we often take for granted the beauty of this world: the flowers, the trees, the birds, the clouds – even those we love. Because we see things so often, we see them less and less.” – Joseph B. Wirthlin

The main problem with us is that we are constantly craving things that we do not have, but we always forget the things we already have. Once we get what we want, another thing takes its place, and the thing we wanted in the first place quickly loses its value. This not only happens with material things, but with everything around us. We take for granted material possessions, we take for granted the food we eat, the water we drink, we take for granted our health, we take for granted the people we love, we take for granted the nature around us, and we take for granted our time on this earth.

It turns out that I smile a lot, and in these moments that is something unusual. I remember someone who once asked me: Why are you always smiling? To which I replied: because life is beautiful, and with a smile he nodded. I mean how could I not smile? Simply look around you. We have everything we need, life is more wonderful than hundreds of years ago, everything is much simpler, we live in a world of opportunities, and still we insist on being sad and angry either because we always search for more things we do not need, or because we are attached to things we no longer have, while we belittle the things we have.

“We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.” – Cynthia Ozick

The real problem of taking things for granted is that we forget to take care of them running the risk of losing them. That is why our planet is in jeopardy and with that our own existence, because we are so used to its beauty, so used of its existence, so used to its resources of water, air, and life that we are not paying attention to the damage we are causing to it. We take for granted our health that is why we not take care of our body putting in risk our own lives. We take for granted our family and that is why we forget to see them not knowing that one day they will not be here, we take for granted our partners that is why we do not give them the love they deserve forcing them to leave us. We take for granted our time, that is why we do not spend it on things that really matter, depleting the most important thing we have.

Close your eyes for a minute and imagine how your life would look like if you didn’t have the things you already have. Your family gone, friends gone, the person you love gone, the things you possess gone, your health gone, no more sun, no more rain, no more mountains, the trees gone, the birds and all animals extinct, your house gone, imagine that there is no water left nor food, no more air to breathe, no more of the things you once had, no more freedom, no more time.

“There’s a lot that is good in your life-don’t take it for granted. Don’t get so focused on the struggles that you miss the gift of today.” – Joel Osteen

That would be a nightmare, isn’t it? Do you want to know something? There are people who are already experiencing that nightmare. Here on this earth, while you take for granted all the things you have and you suffer for the things you don’t, there are people with less that you have, and if we are not careful with our actions, if we do not stop polluting our planet, killing every animal, cutting every tree, if we do not end with every war, this nightmare will become true, and we will lose it all, and thus we will realize that the things we took for granted, were the things that made our heart beat.

Let’s take at least 30 minutes a day to contemplate and be grateful for all the things we have. Let’s stop what we are doing and enjoy the company of our loved ones, let’s admire the nature around us, let’s enjoy the essential and wonderful things of our daily lives. Life is a wonderful place, you only need to become aware of it, enjoy it, love it, and protect it!

Be here, be present, enjoy the moment, be grateful with what you have, and smile because you can!

Follow Your Passion

We spend most of our time immersed in an endless race. We go through life chasing something, believing that it will give us everything we want. This thing is called money, and we believe that this will help us make all our dreams come true. We make money our first priority, we chase it at all costs, and in the end of this race we pay a high price for it and we lose it all. We realize that money made us blind, it made us follow the wrong path, and we have killed our own dreams, burned our desires, and extinguished the flame of our passion. To avoid this before is too late we must change our direction, and follow our passion, not money.

Somehow we have come to believe that having money is what will make us happy and successful. They told us a wonderful story about money, they painted a fantastic picture in our minds, what gave us the idea that money will allow us to buy every possession in this world, and so acquire an everlasting happiness, and we believed it. The problem with this is that we started chasing money instead our passion, not knowing that we were heading straight to our decay.

The problem when we chase money is that we fall into a big trap. This trap attracts us making us believe that money is the solution to all our problems, and the key to a happy and fulfilled life, so we start chasing it, falling into the trap, right into its claws, and slowly devours our souls alive. It consumes every part of us, and it makes us so addict, so dependent that we need it in order to survive, making us believe that in fact, money makes us happy, and the lack of it makes us miserable, and deaf and blind we defend this idea until we die.

“Chase your passion, not your pension.” – Denis Waitley

But how many successful people do you see out there? And with successful I do not mean having money, because having money does not always equals success, but I mean people living their passion, people who have achieved their dreams and desires, people who is happy living the life they want, people who is truly alive. How many people do you see happy doing what they are doing? Not many isn’t it?

The problem with most of us is that we chase money, we get it, and we settle. As long as we can acquire material possessions we are going to have the idea that we are happy the way we are, even if that happiness depends on something as ephemeral as money. We live under a system that makes us believe that money is the key to a happy life, so we do not follow what makes us really happy, we follow money, believing that one day we are going to be free enough to start chasing our passion, and that day never comes.

“There is no passion to be found playing small, in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” – Nelson Mandela

Therefore, it is important to chase your passion. Your passion is your purpose, is doing what you love, what makes you happy. No matter what that is, you can always make a living doing what you love. Money shouldn’t be our main purpose, if that is your main reason of your existence then you haven’t figured out yet why you are really here, and you are limiting yourself from living a wonderful life.

If you chase money, you will always be chasing it, but if you chase your passion, money will follow. People chase money, they get it, they lose it, they get more, they lose more, they get it back, they throw it away, they think again how to get more, and they bury themselves more and more in this madness. This never stops, that is why most people are living a miserable life, and the problem is not that they have or not money, the problem is what they lose, what they hide, what they sacrifice, what they kill, what they destroy, what they forget for money.

“If you can’t figure out your purpose, figure out your passion. For your passion will lead you right into your purpose.” – Bishop T.D. Jakes

What is your passion? What makes you happy? What do you love to do? What is your dream? Take a time to think about it, this is really important my friend. Discover your purpose, find your passion, and go out and chase it, chase it under the sun, under the storm, through light or through darkness, when you feel strong or weak, not matter how hard it gets, or how far you are from reaching your goal, no matter how impossible it looks like, always follow your passion, and everything else, including money will follow. Do not settle, do not limit yourself, do not be the killer of your own dreams.

Decide what you want to do and do it. Be the best at it, fail, try again, fail better, and never stop. Chase your passion with confidence and commitment and live the life of your dreams!
