What is Success?

Is success the road to happiness? How can we achieve success? Is there perhaps a special recipe for it? What should we do to be successful? In order to answer these questions we must ask ourselves this question first: What is success? In the answer to that question we can find the key to our success.

“The whole secret of a successful life is to find out what is one's destiny to do, and then do it.” - Henry Ford #success #quotes

Have you ever thought about the real meaning of success? And what will make you a successful person? Have you ever wonder why you want to succeed? Do you think success is the road to happiness? The truth is that our own definition of success determines whether we are successful or not.

I have always wondered about success, as I grew up with the belief that happiness was the result of success, therefore I always believed that in order to live a happy life one should succeed first. Years later, I not only realized that my belief was wrong, but I also found out that my ideas about success and how to be successful were also wrong, and that was the reason why I struggled and struggled to be successful always failing at it.

“Our greatest fear should not be of failure, but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter.” – Francis Chan

The problem is that our society teaches us that success is equal to having money, or having fame, or power or material things, or a particular social status, or a degree, a good job, a special talent, or a good-looking appearance, or all of the above. Therefore, we go through our life seeking for those things in order to achieve success, but would that be a real success? Can we consider success as being the act of achieving superficial things? Or is it success something more profound?

Therefore, the rule N.1 to achieve success would be to investigate, define and understand the meaning of the word success. According with the dictionary, success means: The favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors; the accomplishment of one’s goals. Therefore, if success is the achievement of one’s goals, wouldn’t anyone who has achieved its goals be a successful person? Even if those goals don’t involve power, fame or fortune? Or in the end, it’s all about how we measure success? That is to say that success can only be measured in a superficial way?

“Stop chasing the money and start chasing the passion.” – Tony Hsieh

Let’s think about this: There are two people with law degree, who would have wanted to study something different. One of them works in a prestigious law firm, while the other one have decided to make his hobby a profession; he quit his job to travel the world. The first of them has his life assured with a degree, a great job, and an excellent salary but the second one doesn’t, he lives day by day, doing what he loves. Therefore, who is successful?

I guess most of the people, judging for the way their lives look like; they would determine that the first one is the one who is successful. But what if they could see deeper? What if you could see and feel what they feel deep inside their hearts? What if you could feel the pain and suffering of the first person for not doing the things he would love to do? And what if you could feel the joy and happiness of the second person? Would you change your mind?

“The first step toward success is taken when you refuse to be a captive of the environment in which you first find yourself.” – Mark Caine

Once again everything depends on your own definition of success and your personal goals, dreams and desires and what you do or cease to do to achieve those things determines your success. Therefore, if you want to be successful, find your own definition for success, find what would be true success for your and make it happen. Success is being who you really are, always believing in yourself, doing what you love regardless how many material things you possess.

In my case, I discovered that success is doing what you love, success is being happy for who you are and what you have. Success is facing challenges every day, not giving up, rising every time you fall. Success means to conquer your fears, without letting them to conquer you. Success is not allowing adversity to defeat you. Success is being who you really are whenever you want it, without being limited for others opinions about you.

“Success? I don’t know what that word means. I’m happy. But success, that goes back to what in somebody’s eyes success means. For me, success is inner peace. That’s a good day for me.” – Denzel Washington

Successful people are those who have always believed in themselves, successful people are doers, dreamers, believers, adventurers, risk takers, and they never give up. Successful people are those who have dared to follow their own dreams. Successful people are all the children and adults, women and men, rich and poor, famous or unknown, with a degree or not, who are out there being happy, doing what they love, chasing their dreams, being who they really are, without trying to please everybody.

To conclude – Is success the road to happiness? As Albert Schweitzer once said – “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” If you want to be successful: Be happy, do what you love, follow your dreams and make them happen and above all be whoever you want to be, otherwise you will succeed being someone else, having a life you don’t want.

Discovering your life’s purpose

Discovering your life’s purpose is not a simple thing but it’s the most important thing in your life, without a purpose, we merely exist. It is discovering the reason why we are here what gives life a meaning, and is living with a purpose what makes life much more interesting and challenging.

How you ever wonder why you are here? How you ever wonder if what you are doing right now is what you came here to do? Because if what you are doing now makes you feel dead inside is because that thing you are doing now is not your purpose, it is not the reason why you are here, because your purpose is what makes you feel alive; your purpose is what gives you joy and happiness, your purpose is what gives your life a meaning.

Wouldn’t be ironic to go through the complicated, sophisticated and miraculous birth process to come to this world just to be dead? Aren’t we supposed to come to this world to live or we came here to be dead? Because most of the people are afraid of death, not knowing that they are already dead inside while their bodies are still alive. The increasing amount of people with depression, anxiety, stress and other mental disorders as well as the increasing amount of suicides worldwide are an indicative that our perspective about life and the reasons of our existence are wrong.

“The mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for.” – Fyodor Dostoyevsky

It seems that when we are kids we know what we would like to become, or at least we dare to dream, and we dare to dream big. When you are a kid everything is possible, but sooner or later that concept is snatched from you, and everything you once believed, all your dreams and desires along with your true self are killed and buried and you become a product of this decadent society.

What would you like to be when you grow up? – My God, if I heard that question when I was a child! I never understood why adults would ask that question if what they only want to hear are things like: I want to be a lawyer just like my Dad! Or I want to be an engineer! Because if you tell them: I want to be a singer! Or I want to be a superhero and save the world! Or I want to become a veterinary and save all the animals! Or I want to become an astronaut! People will usually say something like this: But you won’t earn any money doing that! Or that’s impossible! Or you can’t do that!

“You were put on this earth to achieve your greatest self, to live out your purpose, and to do it courageously.” – Steve Maraboli

The truth is when we become adults we stop believing and we start doing what is best for our family, friends and so on and we do everything we can to fit in this society that slowly kills us inside and we live or in better words we simple exist for the rest of our lives, doing what we don’t want to do, depriving ourselves from our true purpose. The funny thing is we go through life seeking happiness, but we don’t even wonder why are we here, and how in the world can we be absolutely happy if we are not doing what we came here to do?

Discovering your life’s purpose should be your main goal, not money, the car, the house, and other material things, nor fame, nor power. Those things can follow or not, but those things should be absolutely secondary for you. Once you discover your life’s purpose, and you do what you came to do, everything that is good for you will come to you without calling it.

“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Discovering your life’s purpose is not easy, because it requires leaving your comfort zone. To know who you are and why you are really here you must ask questions you have never asked before, you must leave that comfort place where everything is known to enter in that awkward and unknown place where you wonder and doubt everything about your life, and that can be sometimes painful as you will know how unconscious and dead you were, but in the end you will find happiness, peace and joy you have yearned for, and you will know what means to be truly alive.

We are not in this world by accident, we are here for a reason, and finding that reason is the key to live a happy and successful life. If we fail to find that reason, if we avoid finding that purpose, our life becomes an obligation, we become slaves of a miserable life and our daily life becomes our punishment until we are finally released from our pain through the process of death.

Find the reason why you are here and your whole life will have a different meaning. It is a wonderful experience to enjoy life being truly alive!

The Reflection of a Desperate Soul

The reflection of a desperate soul is a short story about a woman who was lost, but who found her true self. It is a story that reflects what is happening to most of the people in our society. Nowadays most of the people are trying to be someone else, trying to be what other people want them to be, forgetting to be themselves. People just exist but they don’t truly live, that’s why there is so much pain and sadness in people’s hearts. So here goes the story…

"None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free." - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

“The reflection of a desperate soul”

It was 5.45 pm on a Tuesday afternoon; it was another common day for a normal woman. She was counting the minutes to get out of the office, or the cell how she used to call it. Finally, she left her prison’s cell to get into the concrete jungle, and as it was the rush hour, the madness was higher than usual. She took her bike as fast as she could and at full speed she headed home.

The concrete jungle was full of ghosts with empty souls, the view was horrific, but she knew a shortcut. She went back home through the secret paradise, which was a lake full of ducks, swans, birds and other different species perfectly hidden in the middle of the city, or the concrete jungle as she used to call it. She usually stopped every day to admire the view for a couple of minutes before going back home, because somehow she always felt some kind of peace while doing it, and as another normal day, she arrived to the lake, got down the bike and went to admire the view, not knowing that her life was about to change forever.

She was watching the animals when suddenly she saw herself reflected in the lake – Who am I? Why am I here? She wondered – She saw her reflection, but couldn’t recognize herself anymore. She always followed the rules, and always did everything she was supposed to do to please her family, friends, and the entire society. But she could see in her reflection her sad and empty eyes that seemed to scream for help, and she realized that she has never been herself, her inner emptiness reflected in her lifeless pale face and in her sad eyes confirmed it. She had forgotten what it was to be a little girl full of joy, dreams and happiness, she had stopped playing with dolls and puppets, and what was worse, she had become one of them, and the ones who were playing were others.

It was in that moment when she realized how lost she was, she never had time to look into her eyes, and reflect about her own miserable reflection. Her soul was empty and her heart seemed to have no pulse, she was a dead body, a ghost, a puppet, a programmed machine of society, she was everything, except herself. And she asked herself one more time – Who are you? Who have you become? – And then anger seized her. She was furious with herself, she was looking at her own reflection with disgust and repulsion, and in that moment of anger and confusion, while looking at her own pathetic reflection in the lake, she fell straight into the water, feelings of sadness and sorrow pierced her body. She stayed there floating on the water, feeling completely lost. She laid down on the lake watching the sky, and said to herself – This is it, I’m lost, I have no way out, I’m a puppet of this society, I don’t even know who I am anymore, I’m just the broken pieces of something I used to be, I have no purpose, no life, I’m not myself, I’m nothing – And she let her body sink into the depths of the lake as she watched the sky.

Suddenly while she was drowning, she saw a beautiful bird with its open wings, flying in the blue sky, she could not help staring at it with a smile on her face, because that bird reminded her about something she had lost many years ago, and that thing was freedom, freedom to be and to do whatever she wanted, freedom to go wherever she wanted, freedom to fly, to travel, to dream. And then after a few seconds she closed her eyes, and in the middle of that reflection and absolute relax, she forgot about the water going through her body, and because of this, she was about to give her last breath when she felt like someone was pushing her back to the surface, when she got there, she opened her eyes, and she saw everything in a completely different way, everything had changed, or in fact, she has changed. And as fast as she could, she got out of the lake and screamed – Freedom! I am free! – She had finally broken the heavy chains that were sinking her. The contact with her own reflection and her inner strength inspired by a divine miracle had opened her eyes, and so she found freedom, she found herself. With all that happiness and joy that gave life to her soul she ran like never before and went back to her home.

On the next day, she felt like she was born again, she realized that in order to be alive, she should be free to do the things she loves and be the person she always wanted to be. And she started living her life again, being her true self. She stopped being a puppet of the society, and far from it, she began to be her true self. And now being herself, being free again, she went out to follow her dreams, and lived her life with love, freedom and passion.

Finding Yourself

I hope you liked the reflection of a desperate soul, it is a story about losing and finding yourself, it’s a story about being free, free to be who you want to be and do whatever you want to do, freedom to go where we want, freedom to follow our heart and dreams. Freedom to choose our own path.

Sometimes in order to find yourself you must feel completely lost at first, because it is in those moments of absolute chaos, when you feel completely lost when you find yourself and with that you find freedom. Knowing who you are and be it, without worrying about what others may think of you means to be truly alive, because when you know who you are, you know why you are here, and discovering your life’s purpose is the key to live a happy and fulfilled life.

Let’s find ourselves, and recover our freedom!
