Life is Made Up of Choices

Life is made up of choices. In every single step of our lives we have the opportunity to choose. We create our world through the choices we make, therefore, our whole life is the result of the choices we have made. The main choice in our life is between choosing to feel good or to feel bad. Therefore, what are you going to choose today?

"May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears." - Nelson Mandela

Every day we are faced with different types of choices and according to what we choose is the consequence we are going to have. There are some kind of circumstances that we are not able to control, these type of circumstances are inevitable, and there is no way we can choose the opposite, and then we have the other circumstances, those which are the results of the choices we have made. But no matter the type of circumstances, we will always have the opportunity to choose. Whatever happens to us, we have the choice to feel good or to feel bad.

The first kind of circumstances, those which we cannot avoid, are the kind of circumstances which we are not responsible for. For example, the death of a loved one. One day, we receive the awful notice that a person close to us has died. There is no way we could have done something to revert that situation. That circumstance is something that happened to us without calling it, therefore, we are not responsible for that, but we are responsible of one thing: the decision of choosing whether to let that circumstance to destroy us or not.

“When you wake up every day, you have two choices. You can either be positive or negative; an optimist or a pessimist. I choose to be an optimist. It’s all a matter of perspective.” – Harvey Mackay

When an inevitable and unwanted circumstance happens we cannot choose another circumstance, another ending, or another story. There is no way we can go back in time and do something to revert what has happened. But when something like that happens we have different choices to make: We can either choose to let that situation to destroy us, or we can choose to keep fighting. We can choose to give up or we can choose to move on. We can choose to see the negative side or we can choose to see the positive side. We can choose to let the pain, anger and sadness we feel to consume us, or we can choose love to heal our hearts. We can choose to keep the poison running through our veins, rotting us on the inside, or we can choose to drain it all out, and clean our body and soul with love.

On the other hand, we have the kind of circumstances that are the results of the choices we have made. For example, when we have failed an exam because we have chosen not to study, or when we felt stomach ache because we have chosen to eat junk food instead of healthy food, or when somebody got cancer because he didn’t want to stop smoking, or when you have lost your partner because you have chosen to betray rather than love, or when we decided to live a life we do not want because we have chosen not to follow our dreams.

“It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.” – Tony Robbins

When a circumstance of that kind happens, we can wish to have done something different but we cannot change what we have done. We are responsible for that, and we must take full responsibility, but at the same time we can make different choices: We can choose to not do anything about it, or we can choose to act. We can choose to let that situation to paralyze us or we can choose to move forward. We can choose to give up or we can choose to do our best to revert the situation, change the situation or accept the situation and move on. We can choose to see the negative side or we can choose to see the positive side. We can choose to feel negative emotions and let them to control us or we can choose to feel positive emotions. We can choose to keep looking to our past with sadness, pain, and anger or we can choose to look into our future with courage, commitment and confidence.

As you can see we cannot always change the situation, but we can always choose how we are going to deal with what has happened. We are responsible of our own choices, and we have always the opportunity to choose to feel good or to feel bad. According to what we do, what we say, what feel, and what we think in relationship with was has happened is what is going to determine our future.  We can choose to be positive and feel good or we can choose to be negative and feel bad. We can always choose to be sad or we can choose to be happy no matter what happens.

“In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Always remember that not everything that will happen to you will be the consequence of your own choices, but at the same time, always remember that every choice you make today will have either a short-term or a long-term consequence in your life.  If you feel that your choices are not getting you closer to the place you want to be, or if you feel that they are not making you feel the way you want to feel, or if you feel that they are not making you be the person you would like to be, it is time for you to make a choice.

You can choose to keep making the same kind of negative choices, leaving everything to chance, or you can choose to stop and make the best possible choices, being the creator of your own destiny. Your happiness depends on the choices you make. If you feel happy, is probably because you are doing the right choices, but if you are not, you are probably doing the wrong ones. Everything is impossible until we make the choice to make the impossible possible.

Our life is the result of our choices, and we are what we choose to be. Everything is a choice, so no matter what happens to you, always make the choice to be happy today, tomorrow and always!

Our past doesn’t define who we are

Our past doesn’t define who we are, because we are not our past, but we are what we choose to be at this very moment. Somehow we have accepted the concept that our past define who we are, but the truth is that our past cannot define us, but we define ourselves through our behaviours and actions of our present.

"Do not give your past the power to define who you are."

Our past doesn’t define us, because the past is gone. The only thing that is here is our present, and what we have chosen to be now is what really define us. In every sunrise, each new day, at any time, we have the opportunity to decide who we are going to be. If you let your past situations define you, if you let others define you, if your let your past behaviours, thoughts and actions define you, if you let external circumstances and things out of your control define you, you will become their slave, but if you decide to be the best version of yourself right here, right now, regardless your past and the person you used to be, then you will become free from any attachment with your old self, having the possibility to be your true self.

The problem is when we fail to be the person we really are by the thoughts and beliefs we have put in our minds about who we are, condemning ourselves to be the person who we are not, for the rest of our lives. There is no greater agony than the one you suffer when you start to believe that you are the person that deep inside your heart you know you are not, repressing and hiding your full potential.

“My past has not defined me, destroyed me, deterred me, or defeated me; it has only strengthened me.” – Steve Maraboli

But the worst issue of all is when people start to believe in the person you are not, because once they accept that person as your true self, they will categorize and define you, and the concept they create in their minds about you rarely changes, what makes everything more difficult for you. That is why the process to change yourself for a better you is not easy, because you must walk the path alone. You will have to face your own misconceptions about yourself, you will have to forgive yourself, forget others opinions about you, and then you will have to accept yourself as you really are and act upon it. The important thing is to believe in yourself, because you create your own destiny and not others, therefore, their opinions about you are absolutely useless.

We all have done and said things that we regret, but what is the point of regretting the person we used to be if that won’t change anything from our past? But what we can change is our present. The key is to embrace the person we used to be, because in a certain way that person shaped us, and released our true self. Our past has defined us, because in the way we acted, but now we define ourselves through our present actions and behaviours, the question is: Are we going to keep letting our past to define us by acting as in our past or are we going to redefine ourselves and act according to our true self?

“Success in any endeavour depends on the degree to which it is an expression of your true self.” – Ralph Marston

We are not our past, we are not our past decisions, we are not our mistakes, we are not our past behaviours, but we are what we choose to be right now, and that is all that matters. The consequences of our past actions cannot be avoided, but we can avoid being the person we are not. We grow, we change, we evolve, and in that way we discover and create our true self, and that is success.

Nobody defines who we are, not even our past nor our old self, but we define ourselves. In this present moment we have the opportunity to decide and express our true self and release the greatness within us. Forgive yourself, accept your true self, love yourself, become the best version of yourself and change your life!

The Story of The Two Wolves: The Battle Within

There are two wolves who are always fighting. One is darkness and despair, and the other is light and hope. The question is: which wolf wins?

"Some of the greatest battles will be fought within the silent chambers of your own soul.” - Ezra Taft Benson

The answer is: The one you feed. This is a great quote from a movie I saw a couple of days ago: Tomorrowland, which has a very inspirational and beautiful message, but it is in fact a Native American Cherokee story, and I would like to share it with you, please read it carefully, the message is wonderful, believe me, you won’t regret it:

An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life.

He said,My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all

“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

A beautiful story, isn’t it? It has within a powerful message that teaches us one thing: We decide. It is up to us to decide which of the wolves we will feed. It doesn’t depend on anyone except ourselves. The story reminds us that we all have a great power within us: The power to decide who we are, what gives us the control of our own feelings, emotions and behaviours.

There are two wolves, there are two of us, they are opposites but equals at the same time, they fight and in the end they become one, and in that moment one of the two wolves’ wins, and the one who wins is the one who we have decided to become. In any given moment we have the chance to decide which wolf is going to win the battle, our external circumstances together with any person we meet along the way will help one of the wolves, but in the end we are the ones who decide who wins. The one who wins more battles, that is to say, the one who we have fed more will win the fight. The question is: Which of them are you going to let win?

“I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions.” – Stephen R. Covey

The first and most important question you should ask yourself is: Who am I? – Which wolf do you think you are? With which one you identify yourself with? Which wolf represents your true self? Once you discover the answers to those questions, you will decide which wolf will you feed, and that is the most important thing that can happen to us: To know who we really are and act according to our true self, being the best version of ourselves.

Every single day of your life, in different situations, you will always have the power to decide: Am I going to feed today the “bad” wolf or the “good” wolf? Am I going to be my true self or am I going to be who I’m not? Am I going to let external situations to control my feelings, emotions and behaviors or am I going to act as my true self? The decision is yours, and that of course is the difficult part to accept, because it’s much easier to blame others for our behaviors rather than having full responsibility for what we believe, think, speak and do. But always remember that it doesn’t matter who you were yesterday, what really matters from now on is who you choose to be right now. Your past situations do not define you, because it is you who define yourself, it is you who has the power to decide now who you really are.

“Who are you now? Who have you decided you really are now? Don’t think about who you have been. Who are you now? Who have you decided to become? Make this decision consciously. Make it carefully. Make it powerfully.” – Tony Robbins

Let’s take just a couple of minutes to think. Think about the last few days, which wolf do you think you have been feeding? How do you feel about that? If your life is full of happiness, joy, peace, if you believe, dream and wish, if you feel happy even when your life is not going 100% the way you wanted, then probably you have been feeding the right wolf because you have decided to feel that way even though your external circumstances gave you a lot of resources to help you feed the other wolf. Can you see? You have the control at any moment to decide which wolf you are going to feed, and when we have the control, we are free, and we are no longer vulnerable to external circumstances.

Two wolves, one decision, you choose, the power is within you. Your actions will define yourself and will create your destiny. Therefore, which wolf are you going to feed today?
