The Consequences of Our Actions

Our actions and their consequences shape our future. Every action causes a consequence either long-term or short-term. Some of them are reversible, and some are irreversible. Some are insignificant, having no important impact in our lives, but some consequences can change our lives for the better or for worst. Therefore, it is very important to remember that we cannot scape from the consequences of our actions. We create our destiny day after day, decision after decision and action after action.

"While we are free to choose our actions, we are not free to choose the consequences of our actions." – Stephen R. Covey

Our life is basically the result of our actions, and in some cases is also composed by the result of the actions of other people. The consequences of our actions create our reality and shape our future, and they are most of them under our control. Then, we have the actions of other people, we cannot control them but we can control how we react against the consequences of their actions, and once again what we think, feel and do will produce a certain consequence in our lives, what will give us a certain experience. In the end, our own decisions and actions create our daily experience.

Most of the time we can be aware of the consequence of an action. If we drink too much we know we are going to get drunk, if we do not sleep enough we know we are going to feel tired, if we eat spoiled food we know we are going to get sick, but the problem is that sometimes, we do not have the power to know the consequence that will be produced by a certain action, what creates uncertainty, and that is why sometimes is very hard to make a decision. It is then, very important to make good choices, thinking in the consequence that we are going to get in the future as result of an action we take today, creating the kind of life we would like to experience.

“Nobody ever did, or ever will, escape the consequences of his choices.” – Alfred A. Montapert

We should not always be afraid of consequences. If they are favorable they can bring us a wonderful experience, but if they are not, they somehow have the power to teach us a lesson. For example, when a child wants to do something that won’t have a good consequence in its life, like touching the oven when its mother is cooking. As kids we are not aware of the consequences of our actions, so we normally do something even when the consequences are not going to be favorable, but after experiencing the awful consequence of touching the hot oven and getting burn one learn a very valuable lesson, but we are not going to avoid the pain of the burn.

What I mean with this is that sometimes the consequences of our actions will bring us the chance to grow and evolve, but at the same time we will not be able to avoid the outcome of that consequence. Whatever you do now will have a consequence in the future, so in order to avoid regret is good to avoid doing those kind of things that we already know that won’t produce a positive consequence for our lives, and if we do not know what could happen, if the odds are more in our favor, if the chances of positive consequences are high and the negatives low, then we should move on and take the risk.

“In nature there are neither rewards nor punishments; there are consequences.” – Robert Green Ingersoll

Therefore, take the kind of actions that will lead you to the place you want to be, and will bring you the kind of things you would like to get. We have right now, in this very moment the opportunity to create the life we want, we can start shaping the future we yearn, and we do that with every choice, and action after action. Whatever you want to experience tomorrow, start creating it now. When we make an action that won’t produce a favorable consequence, even though it will teach us a lesson and it will, in some way, help us to grow and evolve, we limit ourselves from living a wonderful, joyful and happy life, and we risk losing very valuable things in our lives.

Take the actions that will produce the consequences you would like to experience and you will have the opportunity to live the life you have always imagined!

Small Steps Lead to Success

In order to achieve any goal and dream we must take small steps each day, because those are the ones that will lead us to success.  In a previous post, I wrote about the importance of taking the first step. The first step is decisive, and every step we make afterwards will lead us to the place where we want to be. We can make all our dreams and desire a reality, one step at a time.

"Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out." - Robert Collier

The key to achieving our goals lies in the small steps we make each day. The amounts of steps we will have to take in order to achieve our goal will depend in the magnitude of our goal. The problem is that sometimes our dreams and goals are so big that is easy to get overwhelmed with all the things we have to do in order to achieve them, and it is in that moment when we give up.

If most people fail to achieve their goals is not because life is unfair and only benefits a few, but they fail because they have refused to take the necessary steps in order to reach their goals. The difference between those who are successful and those who are not is not luck but commitment. It is true that for some people things are easier than for others, but that can’t be used as excuse for giving up, instead it can be used as motivation to keep moving forward, one step at a time.

Every day do something that will inch you closer to a better tomorrow.” – Doug Firebaugh

Therefore, the most important thing we can do after we have decided to take the first step toward our goal is to divide that goal in small steps. Let’s imagine as an example that your goal for the next 2 months is to get a job. Therefore, in order to achieve that goal, you will have to follow a few different steps: Write your resume, send it to different companies, prepare yourself for interviews, and so on. Some of them will be easier than others, and sometimes you will have to repeat one of the steps one more time because it didn’t go well the first try, but if you don’t give up sooner or later you will achieve your goal.

Well, we can say that every goal works in the same way as that example. We will have more goals, smaller and harder than the one in the example, but they will all be possible.  Therefore, the best we can do in order to achieve our goals is to divide that goal in small steps, or in more achievable goals. Those small goals will seem more possible to achieve, what will give us the idea that we can make it, and once we do that, we will be one step closer from our biggest goal.

“Know what you want to do, hold the thought firmly, and do every day what should be done, and every sunset will see you that much nearer to your goal.” – Elbert Hubbard

What will happen when we achieve one of those small goals is that we will feel good because our brain will not know the difference between one goal or another, therefore, every victory, no matter how small or big will flood our mind and body with positive emotions, what will make us feel better about ourselves, creating in our mind the belief that we can make it, and if we believe that we are capable of achieving anything we want, then there is nothing that can stop us from doing so.

Here we have another example: Let’s say that you want to lose weight, and your goal is to lose 10 kg, you can divide that big goal in small steps or even in small goals. For example, you can start by losing 1 kilo in 1 week. That is a more achievable goal and more easy to do, what will prevent you from being overwhelmed about the idea of having to lose 10 kg. Once you have a new and smaller goal you can set up all the steps you must take in order to achieve it, and step by step you will reach that goal. And as a result you will be one step closer to your goal. You can continue step by step achieving those small goals, until you finally achieve your desired goal.

The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” – Chinese Proverb

Those little steps are the ones that will lead us to success. Therefore, you should ask yourself the following questions: What is your biggest goal? Have you taken the first step? What are the steps you should take in order to achieve your goal? If you goal is big enough, is it possible to divide your goal in smaller and more achievable goals? Which steps can you take in order to achieve that new goal? What can you do next in order to be one step closer from your goal?

I encourage you to take a paper and a pen and write your goal. Therefore, you will be able to write the steps you will have to take in order to achieve that goal. Focus in the first step, and then continue with the next one, and step by step you will achieve your goals!

Life is Made Up of Choices

Life is made up of choices. In every single step of our lives we have the opportunity to choose. We create our world through the choices we make, therefore, our whole life is the result of the choices we have made. The main choice in our life is between choosing to feel good or to feel bad. Therefore, what are you going to choose today?

"May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears." - Nelson Mandela

Every day we are faced with different types of choices and according to what we choose is the consequence we are going to have. There are some kind of circumstances that we are not able to control, these type of circumstances are inevitable, and there is no way we can choose the opposite, and then we have the other circumstances, those which are the results of the choices we have made. But no matter the type of circumstances, we will always have the opportunity to choose. Whatever happens to us, we have the choice to feel good or to feel bad.

The first kind of circumstances, those which we cannot avoid, are the kind of circumstances which we are not responsible for. For example, the death of a loved one. One day, we receive the awful notice that a person close to us has died. There is no way we could have done something to revert that situation. That circumstance is something that happened to us without calling it, therefore, we are not responsible for that, but we are responsible of one thing: the decision of choosing whether to let that circumstance to destroy us or not.

“When you wake up every day, you have two choices. You can either be positive or negative; an optimist or a pessimist. I choose to be an optimist. It’s all a matter of perspective.” – Harvey Mackay

When an inevitable and unwanted circumstance happens we cannot choose another circumstance, another ending, or another story. There is no way we can go back in time and do something to revert what has happened. But when something like that happens we have different choices to make: We can either choose to let that situation to destroy us, or we can choose to keep fighting. We can choose to give up or we can choose to move on. We can choose to see the negative side or we can choose to see the positive side. We can choose to let the pain, anger and sadness we feel to consume us, or we can choose love to heal our hearts. We can choose to keep the poison running through our veins, rotting us on the inside, or we can choose to drain it all out, and clean our body and soul with love.

On the other hand, we have the kind of circumstances that are the results of the choices we have made. For example, when we have failed an exam because we have chosen not to study, or when we felt stomach ache because we have chosen to eat junk food instead of healthy food, or when somebody got cancer because he didn’t want to stop smoking, or when you have lost your partner because you have chosen to betray rather than love, or when we decided to live a life we do not want because we have chosen not to follow our dreams.

“It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.” – Tony Robbins

When a circumstance of that kind happens, we can wish to have done something different but we cannot change what we have done. We are responsible for that, and we must take full responsibility, but at the same time we can make different choices: We can choose to not do anything about it, or we can choose to act. We can choose to let that situation to paralyze us or we can choose to move forward. We can choose to give up or we can choose to do our best to revert the situation, change the situation or accept the situation and move on. We can choose to see the negative side or we can choose to see the positive side. We can choose to feel negative emotions and let them to control us or we can choose to feel positive emotions. We can choose to keep looking to our past with sadness, pain, and anger or we can choose to look into our future with courage, commitment and confidence.

As you can see we cannot always change the situation, but we can always choose how we are going to deal with what has happened. We are responsible of our own choices, and we have always the opportunity to choose to feel good or to feel bad. According to what we do, what we say, what feel, and what we think in relationship with was has happened is what is going to determine our future.  We can choose to be positive and feel good or we can choose to be negative and feel bad. We can always choose to be sad or we can choose to be happy no matter what happens.

“In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Always remember that not everything that will happen to you will be the consequence of your own choices, but at the same time, always remember that every choice you make today will have either a short-term or a long-term consequence in your life.  If you feel that your choices are not getting you closer to the place you want to be, or if you feel that they are not making you feel the way you want to feel, or if you feel that they are not making you be the person you would like to be, it is time for you to make a choice.

You can choose to keep making the same kind of negative choices, leaving everything to chance, or you can choose to stop and make the best possible choices, being the creator of your own destiny. Your happiness depends on the choices you make. If you feel happy, is probably because you are doing the right choices, but if you are not, you are probably doing the wrong ones. Everything is impossible until we make the choice to make the impossible possible.

Our life is the result of our choices, and we are what we choose to be. Everything is a choice, so no matter what happens to you, always make the choice to be happy today, tomorrow and always!
